George Eliot was the pen name (a writing name) used by the English novelist Mary Ann Evans, one of the most important writers of European fiction. George Eliot lived with George Henry Lewes, a journalist who encouraged her career, from 1851 until his death in 1878. They were unable to get married because English law at the time prevented Lewes from getting a divorce. In 1880, several months before her death, she married a banker named John Walter Cross. Evans was born on an estate of her father’s employer. She went as a boarder to Mrs. Wallington’s School at Nuneaton (1828–32), where she came under the influence of Maria Lewis, the principal governess, who inculcated a strong evangelical piety in the young girl.
