I first read this book when in college. I was under terrific pressure and accidentally found it in the University of North Carolina Library. Reading the amazing voyage of this former German soldier who became a physician after the war showed me that anything is possible given the will and courage to do it. Hannes Lindemann had a poets heart and the courage of a lion. Across the Pacific in a dug out canoe and again in a rubber fold boat. It would sounds like fiction if it wasn't true.

Hannes Lindemann (28 December 1922 – 17 April 2015) was a German doctor, navigator and sailor. He made two solo transatlantic crossings, one in a sailing dugout canoe made while working in Liberia and the second in a 17-foot Klepper Aerius II double. His book Alone at Sea documents the trips, which were totally unassisted.

This collection of stories has something for everyone and for all tastes. Personally, I enjoyed everyone of them!

The adventures covered and the authors of the stories cover men, women, the famous, the infamous, and the ordinary sailor. No matter what your preference, you'll find stories here that will please you. The ones that you think will please you less, you will read also. After cherry-picking from the Table of Contents, my enthusiasm level was such that I read every one of the others because I was afraid I'd miss something.

These stories absolutely demonstrate the adage that "One who reads lives a thousand lives. He who does not read lives only one life." How sad for the latter group. I enjoyed every adventure that I vicariously had while reading "Great Voyages in Small Boats". Shouldn't you?

You must be sailing interested to appreciate this book. If you could imagine sailing in the North Atlantic ,in October, at night and watching your 25' sailboat disappear under a wave while you are standing on the transom and holding onto the rear mast stay might be an interesting experience, you might be interested in this book. If you have no idea what I am writing about, don't bother. This is the second time I have owned this book. How about sailing a log canoe from Africa to the Caribbean. That sort of stuff.

There are three fully complete (not abridged) accounts of challenging sea voyages. The reason I bought this book, however, was to read Ann Davison's insightful, humorous, frightful account of her solo Atlantic crossing in 1953/54 in a 25 foot sloop titled "My Ship is so Small." Her account of the people she meets, especially the way she is treated by various men, is more engaging even than the trials of sailing so far alone before GPS and many safety aids. One of the better sea stories written. Highly recommended.

i had been looking for a copy of alone at sea in english since i have a beautiful german copy but my german isnt quite top knotch, so i found this book. i was afraid it might just be exerpts but alas its really got the whole 3 books. a hell of a buy.

another extraordinary, classic sailing book that's sadly slipped away from common knowledge and is quite hard to find -- i believe this book was originally published (around 1956) as 'My Boat is So Small'. Davidson is a great writer in the tradition of witty, frugal, understated WWII-era brits. her single handed adventure, following the death of her husband, falls squarely into the pantheon of sailors whose lack of experience or technical ability is inspirationally surpassed in guts, perserverance, faith, determination, and common sense. this is certainly a book that deserves a lot more attention, and is a pleasure to read. Her earlier book 'Last Voyage' is even harder to find, but well worth it, and makes a very excellent companion to this book, though about half of it concerns WWII life in england -- though for sailors the fraction dealing with sailling still makes the book worth reading. In the spirit of singlehanded women, we must also reccomend Aebi's Maiden Voyage!
