LOVE THIS BOOK!

Faegal
Reading this book, originally published in 1994, twenty years later, I am quite surprised that it apparently had never topped the best seller lists. There is a brooding, dark subtext to Hamerstrom's writing punctuated in recounting her childhood with a Huck-Finn-ish style of subtlety and the first comprehension by a child of the world's duplicity, stupidity, abuse, and injustice. This book is about a brilliant woman coming to awareness in the Neanderthal Era of the 20th Century: Beginning a "double life" - with an under-cover insight penetrating the dross of humanity.

This is not just your garden-variety book about a bunny-hugger; rather, it is a piercing exploration of how we in this country have come to be the way we are: disconnected from Nature, mired in narcissistic technology, idiotic politics and war, unaware that we hurtle through space, time, and darkness toward a certain future of ignorance and most probably the extinction of homo sapiens.

Don't expect to "feel good" after reading "My Double Life." No, hunker down with this book in a cold wind, under a prairie sky and a flannel blanket. Await your miserable fate with full knowledge of the fact that it didn't have to be this way. You deserve it. The "end" is so much more fitting when, like revenge, it is best served "cold."

5 Stars! Up there with James Herriot, Temple Grandin, Cleveland Amory. By the way: This IS NOT a children's book...If your kid has an IQ above 98, it will be, in part, most disturbing to reflective souls.

This beatifully written biography describes the early life and career of wildlife biologist Frances Hamerstrom, the first female graduate student of Aldo Leopold (author of A Sand County Almanac) and pioneer in the field of wildlife biology. Hamerstrom's account describes her upbringing in Boston in the early 1900's, her marriage to Frederick Hamerstrom and their joint careers as graduate students, and wildlife biologists in Wisconsin. Filled with humor, you will laugh to read of her transition as a teenager in Brookline sneaking out to go ballroom dancing to that of a dedicated biologist. Even the biology will make you laugh as she describes trying to capture a hawk by getting it to land on a fencepost-- and 'decorating' the rest of the fenceposts with bouquets of goldenrod to make them un-land-upon-able. A great read!
