Eliot Wigginton, Sometimes a Shining Moment; The Foxfire Experience, New York: Anchor, 1985.

Though first conceived primarily as a sociological work, recounting oral traditions, the books, particularly the early ones, were a commercial success as instructional works. Members of the 1970s back-to-the-land movement used the books as a basis to return to lives of simplicity. The first book was published in 1972 as The Foxfire Book. SOMETIMES A SHINING MOMENT The Foxfire Experience. IT is refreshing and inspiring to read Eliot Wigginton's history of the magazine and project called Foxfire, which he began as a teacher in a small public high school at Rabun Gap, G. two decades ago. Refreshing because the Foxfire project, a quarterly magazine about the culture and folk heritage of southern Appalachian mountain residents, is a highly innovative and successful experiment in high school English teaching. And we have had in recent years little but criticism for our public schools, and the teachers in them, from either end of the political spectrum.

This book doesn't have the same type of stories so did not enjoy it as much as the Foxfire books.

This is an incredible book, truly envisioning what education can be. By getting students to interview and film and document the local knowledge of the people around them, Wigginton was able to help them connect to their roots, grow pride in their heritage, and learn practical skills of film, research and writing. They also gained knowledge of an array of hand-craft skills most of us have long since lost. At the same time the interviewees learned to have pride in their own knowledge and skills that are so often dismissed as old-fashioned and irrelevant. Together, students, subjects, and the audience of their published Foxfire books, gain a sense of place, connectedness, and competence. It all starts when Wigginton gives up the standard education models of tests, curriculum, classroom management, and consequences, and listens to his students.
