Fire investigation, sometimes referred to as origin and cause investigation, is the analysis of fire-related incidents. After firefighters extinguish a fire, an investigation is launched to determine the origin and cause of the fire or explosion. Investigations of such incidents require a systematic approach and knowledge of basic fire science. In common with many forensic disciplines, one of the early tasks of fire investigation is often to determine whether or not a crime has been committed

Kirk's fire investigation.

Author Richard J. Keyworth stands tall and his courage and commitment to fighting and investigating fires stand even taller. His account of 14 of the innumerable fires he investigated will intrigue, inform and educate fellow firefighters and law enforcement professionals. Because fire is mystical at times and practical at others, FIRE... Accidental or Arson? will also entrance the general public. His investigations will twist and turn and take place in likely and unlikely locations. Readers will be as interested in the investigative process as the investigator's cohorts and the investigator himself. The real names of the perpetrators and the victims do not appear in Keyworth's manuscript, as a courtesy to those who have tragic memories and to those who were charged with arson and either convicted or acquitted. Their stories are told in an entertaining manner; Keyworth is an attention-gripping story teller. Flip up the sides of his fire helmet and he is Sherlock Holmes. FIRE...Accidental or Arson? invites the reader to stand inside incinerated buildings and follow Keyworth and his expert associates as they explore the evidence and determine the cause. The conclusions of his scientific investigations will illuminate the guilty and absolve the innocent. "A fire investigator is a finder of the facts and a seeker of the truth," says Keyworth. "A single circumstance does not cause the fire, it is a series of events and circumstances which come together to cause a fire." It is this series of events and circumstances which leads him to the true cause of the fire. He brings over 40 years of experience as well as countless hours of education and training to this book. Mr. Keyworth is a consummate professional.

I have no background in law enforcement or the fire service, so I came to this book "cold". I truly enjoyed it.

The writing is very amateur. Various small memories are mixed in for no reason - for example, I hadn't seen so-and-so for years, I went to school with so-and-so, I remember his beef stew...what do those things have to do with anything? There are typos and spelling mistakes, and the author does not have a very strong narrative drive. Most of these stories are brief - I came, I investigated, I reported. The stories in generally only a few pages long.

However, the variety of cases is what makes it interesting. Some are quite surprising combinations of circumstances, some are clearly arson from the start, some have a human interest side. I can fault the author's writing style, but regardless I enjoyed these stories quite a bit. Another reviewer complained that the arson stories are mostly blatant accelerant use. Maybe this book should have been titled "interesting fires" or something because it's true that there isn't much suspense about the fire's cause, though I found the explanations of how these fires started to be quite interesting nonetheless.

Overall, worth the price and an enjoyable read.

I have been a certified fire investigator since 2004 and i find all of the information to be factual in its appearance as listed. I would like to commend the author for being able to put a difficult profession into terms that anyone can understand. This book shares some simple truths that follow the guidelines of NFPA-921. I enjoy learning different things from different sources and will count this as a training time for myself.

Each chapter is the story of a fire and they were all pretty interesting. I wish the author had started with a sketch of his background and experience before beginning the stories, it would have set a good basis. Next there were some editing errors that jarred. Lastly, as some other reviewers mentioned, there was quite a bit of self-congratulating going on. Don't tell us how great you are, show us.

Great read. Easy read filled with interesting twists in investigations of causes. Case studies are interesting and sometimes amusing.

Ishnsius
This book explores the investigations of the author throughout his life of investigations. I would recommend this book. Understand these are investigations that the suthor has investigated. It has many cases of interest throughout the book. I had the pleasure of meeting the author recently at a seminar in Illinois. It was a great addition to the book.

Shaktit
I found the author to be egotistical. He put himself on a pedestal every chance he got and I believe that took away from the actual investigations he was explaining. The stories themselves were interesting to a point, but it seems like the only arson fires described involved the blatant evidence of accelerants left at the scene. Perhaps this is most often the case, but I would have liked to read about the author's experiences where the investigation proved difficult and the evidence was not so obvious. Although I don't consider the book a waste of time, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone interested in the science of arson investigation.

Kanek
Written more like a story teller than a professional. And his comments on somen women's breast size, and how much he enjoyed looking at them were totally inappropriate. He comes off like a backwoods hick. If you're looking to learn anything about fire source detection, this is not the book you want.
