After attempting to understand advanced macro from various books, I found the new edition (2nd)of this book and it has really been very helpful. Mankiw, Blanchard and other foundational level books are basically for undergraduate level. If you start looking for an advanced Macro book, you have Advanced Macroeconomics by Romer and then there are much more advanced textbook, which are often difficult to grasp without considerable macro training beforehand. This is a good book which straddle the undergraduate and graduate level. In US, students often have to make transition from undergraduate to graduate level (Pd.D.) where emphasis suddenly shifts and the experience is often frustrating. Most of the best US Universities now do not offer stand alone Masters in Economics (they enroll only for Ph.D.), though Europe and other countries still have very popular Masters degrees in Economics. And the book is very suitable for Master level courses in Macroeconomics. Only other book comparable to its level of rigour is Romer's book. However, it breadth is wider then Romer's book.

The book is divided into two parts - Intermediate Macroeconomics and Advanced Macroeconomics. It contains most of the popular and up-to-date topics in Macroeconomics including advanced models in the later part.

I would also say that the book would be really helpful if one uses the accompanying 'Exercise and Solution Manual' because practicing problems in the best way to learns technical subjects. It should also be noted that the book does not contain any problem/question. Problems and Solutions to all the problems are made part of 'solution manual'.

Further - there are some typos/mistakes spread here and there. Although it makes smooth reading and understanding difficult, nevertheless, it deserves 4 star for filling an important gap in Macro level text-books. The price is also high for a paperback edition and it makes it difficult for students from developing countries to make a buying decision.

Finally, if you are really looking for a masters level comprehensive Macroeconomics textbook, go for it; but also buy its 'Exercise and Solution Manual'.

I am quantitative macro (broadly defined) with 40 years of consulting experience. I read pretty much every "mathy" macro, micro, & finance book that comes out & this is one of the VERY best takes on mainstream macro. Great perspective on core themes & important viewpoints combined with straightforward derivations & explanations. I've recommended 1st edition & now this 2nd edition to colleagues who have also found it very useful.

This is not a "foundation" book. (may be that is why this word is hard to see).

Advanced Macroeconomics is a very difficult subject to study (because it is highly technical), and a very difficult subject to write about (because it is currently completely disjointed). The amount of material in this text and the author's ability to explain the technical material is just amazing.

The authors' teaching background really showed up in this book. The dominance of intuitive explanations were perfectly balanced with advanced (when needed) mathematical representations. It is the perfect bridge between intermediate (again, NOT beginner) and graduate level macroeconomic knowledge. It is really helpful and it will springboard you to other more advanced books (hence the title: "Foundations...") without you noticing it. I specially enjoyed the "down to earth" tone. It also has a great mathematical appendix that is very useful. Great book all around.
