HTML (the Hypertext Markup Language) is the fundamental building block for intranets and the Web. This text provides coverage of HTML topics, including cascading style sheets, layers, Dynamic HTML, Active Server Pages and introductions to XML and XHTML. Included is a reference to HTML tags.
This book should be enough to get you going in web design. Within a single day, I was creating very basic web pages - so it can be done. Sure, I knew a little about computers going into it, but it was my first time trying to speak to my machine in anything other than "point-and-click" fashion.
What I like the best about this book is the fact that they take you from the beginning and get you thinking about how you should really go about the designing your site. They show examples of excellent and poor website design and talk about what makes a site navigable. This general approach becomes much more focused as you progress through the book.
You've got more basic HTML in this book than you'll know what to do with, BUT if you get a real handle on the beginner stuff, you can delve into some of the more advanced material. Dynamic HTML, JavaScript, XML, basic Perl and CGI are all included.
I got to admit it, I haven't progressed to the point where I have used all of the concepts in this book. It's comforting to know that I have the tools at my disposal when I'm ready, though. For now, seeing as how I've learned the basics, all I need are the reference charts and quickie quides that are posted throughout. This book is pretty darn cheap for all of its comprehensiveness, so you owe it to yourself to purchase the darned thing. Several friends of mine that are much more familiar with HTML conventions than myself, have riffled through my copy of this book and run out to buy it themselves. That kind of response tells me that I made a sound decision. Well, that and the fact that I now maintain several portions of our internal webpages at work and people ask ME questions about HTML. Yeehaw! Happy building!

I am an HTML programmer of an intermediate level. And this book is taking me to newer heights.
This book has everything you can ask for regarding HTML. In-depth coverage of all tags, their descriptions, usage (yes, I said USAGE) is given in a lucid, easy-read language. I was also pleasantly surprised to find chapters pertaining to web design (how to make good web sites/pages), something that is sorely missed by other so-called books on HTML. And just when you thought you had every piece of HTML tag under your belt, the book comes out with more topics - in terms of CGI, javascript, DHTML & XML. What more can one ask for at such a low price!
Even though this book is a mix of several books, continuity and readability is thoroughly maintained throughout the book. And examples, yes examples, they are a plenty everywhere - taken in from the real world. This book keeps getting better and better.
This book is excellent & highly recommended for beginners and intermediates. One is bound to be awed by the amount of information contained in it. I am sure even advanced/expert HTML programmers will find something of their interest in this book. Acts as a great reference look-up for them.

In computing, most of the Sybex's 'Complete' series offer the best value for money. This "HTML Complete" testifies to this fact. The book simplified every aspect HTML.
With chapters that include Web typography, Dynamic HTML, XML, ASP, Perl, JavaScripts and so on, readers are bound to discover which tools are best suited for a particular purpose or circumstance. Apart from discussing how to code HTML, there is in-depth coverage of basic syntax, as well as how to optimize graphics employed in Web creations and publications.
Comprehensive suggestions on how to manipulate websites with contemporary technologies like audio and video were included.
This is a very useful HTML textbook. Anybody who reads it, will value the way it simplified interactive databases, secure transactions, and many programming methods. It was designed for all user-level; and I will not hesitate to recommend it for you.

HTML Complete contains pieces from several other web design books. While I would consider myself an intermediate web designer, I still managed to learn some new things from this book.
The appendix is really great and is easily worth the price of this book by itself! I was a little bit disappointed that more wasn't said about server-side scripting (ok, there's a whole chapter on Perl, but no mention of Microsoft's ASP or the very popular PHP programming language). But apart from this there's plenty of good examples.
The early HTML chapters have a tendency to say "don't use this tag, you should really use CSS to achieve the same result", which is ok, except when you get to the chapters on CSS the book advises you that plenty of people are still using browsers that don't properly support CSS (or even support it at all), and that you should therefore be cautious when using CSS!

I was in the bookstore just looking around, not really planning on buying anything, and this just lept out at me. I have experience in HTML, but was using older books as reference. A quick look into the first few chapters of this book and I was hooked and bought it. It is what I consider to be the most complete and up-to-date reference on the subject of web programming, including HTML4, DHTML Java, Javascript, CGI and PERL scripting, cascading style sheets. It also teaches the basics to all of these concepts, assuming no previous knowledge, prefect for anyone. The Appendix is especially great as it covers EVERY sinlge tag and attribute for Win95/98 and IE/Netscape. It is clear, concise and more importantly, NOT dry and technical, but interesting to read as it is compiled from wide sources, and has practical example to guid you. Excellent job Sybex!!
