Simply placing students with mild disabilities in the general education classroom and issuing them a grade-level textbook is not enough. To ensure the individual student's the basic right to learn, teachers need to provide appropriate and reasonable adaptations. But how can this be accomplished? How can the busy professional implement adaptations for the individual children while maintaining the equilibrium of the class as a whole? The answer is flexibility. Listed below are eight principles for making adaptations in the elementary classroom.

The ADAPT Strategy: Thinking It through to Join the Lesson and the Learner. Adapting Reading and Math Materials for the Inclusive Classroom Kindergarten through Grade Five. This article provides a detailed description of a curricular adaptation decision-making process based on the tenets of reflective practice and designed to assist educators to devise meaningful and effective instruction for students in heterogenous classrooms. this adaptive decision-making process emerged from examining teacher thinking while teams of educators engaged in creative problem solving regarding daily curricular and instructional outcomes for learners.

A modeled thinking process of the ADAPT strategy was provided. The participants’ (n 43) application of Universal Design strategies to adapt lesson plans for diverse learners was compared using a rubric. Three lesson plans for each participant was collected for both Class 1 and Class 2. The first lesson plan was collected in the beginning of the course prior to instruction; the second, after the . lecture with guided practice for Class 1 (control) and the UDL training with the ADAPT strategy for Class 2 (experimental)
