This book is an account of the battles fought by Judas Maccabeus between 166 and 160 B.C. against the forces of the Seleucids during the revolt of the Jews against domination by the Seleucid empire. It reexamines the accepted assessments of Judas Maccabeus' activities and achievements and seeks to reconstruct the course of the military and political events of his time. Part I examines the composition and strength of the armies on both sides, their armaments and operating methods, and discusses the extent of Judas Maccabeus' success. Following an introduction evaluating the Jewish writings from all points of view, Part II gives detailed accounts of the battles, including the terrain and the tactics employed, analysing and commenting on the relevant narratives from the Book of Maccabees. Numerous appendices discuss individual problems vital to the reconstruction of the historical developments.
Comments:
Grillador
This is an excellent and EXTREMELY RARE military history discussing the tactical and operational aspects of Judas Maccabeus' war against the Seleucid army, at a very "reasonable" price. The first part of the book analyses IN DETAILS the armament and composition of both the Seleucid and Jewish armies. It also has an excellent section about the capability of the Seleucid army in fighting in a mountainous terrain.

The second part of the book analyses the tactical and operational aspects of the Maccabeus Revolt against the Seleucid. However, the book does not provide a continuous narrative but rather the chapters in this part of the book are commentaries of the books Maccabees I and II, discussing various tactical and operational factors. If you are not familiar with Maccabees I and II you may want to read them before reading this book. Although, this book quoted liberaly from those two books.

The best aspect of this book are the detailed tactical and topographical maps which accompanied the chapters. Alas, such maps are rare in military history books. Every military professional will appreciate the maps in this book.

If you are a military historian or professional, you will enjoy and learn much from this book which teaches about a guerilla war (with religious motives) in a constricted terrain (in the Middle East) between a conventional army and a hit and run guerilla forces. Does it sound sort of familiar to you?

The monograph "Judas Maccabaeus: The Jewish Struggle agaisnt the Seleucids" by Bezalel Bar-Kochva is a must have for one who tries to grasp the history of the early Maccabean Peirod. The author's specialized knowledge of the military formations may be too thorough and beyond many reader's interest, and his commentary on 1 Maccabees is brief. But his works in the appendices, harmonizing primary historical sources to form a chronology of the period, are very helpful.

Gold as Heart
This is an impressive book, because of its size, because of its contents and because of the erudition it displays, although it does has a couple of drawbacks as well.

The book’s subject is “the Jewish struggle against the Seleucids”, and in particular an account of the battles fought by Judas Maccabeus between 166 and 160 B.C. against the forces of the Seleucid Empire. The first part of the book examines the composition, strength and respective equipment of the respective armies. It also discusses to what extent the insurgents were successful and the reasons for both their successes and defeats. Part two is an elaborate and, at times, extremely scholarly, discussion of the sources, including a line by line explanation and commentary. Although this can be somewhat off putting for the non-specialist, I would nevertheless encourage the reader to persevere because there are multiple gems buried in the commentaries. These include information of terrain and tactics, but also plausible reconstitutions of battles and whole campaigns. Finally, a third part includes a collection of numerous annexes on specific problems, including several on Seleucid forces.

Overall, this is a valuable book that makes several key points. One is that, contrary to what is sometimes believed, the Seleucid army was far from being a spent force and was still quite formidable between 166 and 160 BC. Here the contents of the book draw heavily, and at times paraphrase, the author’s major book on “the Seleucid army”, first published in 1976 and still very much the major reference on the subject. In the first part, Judas Maccabaeus presents the main features and components of the Seleucid army. It also shows that despite being defeated by the Romans and having lost Asia Minor, the Seleucid Empire remained the superpower in the East, although a superpower that was subject to increasing pressure from the Parthians. A related feature was that the Jewish rebellion was, at least initially, very much of a sideshow for an Empire. Most of the available forces during the first few years, and just about all of the crack units, were deployed and fighting in the East.

Initial Jewish successes arose because of skilful guerrilla hit-and-run tactics of Judas and his brothers against often outnumbered garrisons made up of mercenaries and auxiliaries. A second stage in the rebellion took place after the death of the Antiochus IV Epiphane in 164 BC when Judas expanded his army and converted it into a more conventional force including both cavalry and “heavy” (pike-armed) infantry, before bringing it to battle several times against the Seleucids. During this second stage, he was much less successful, especially when a fraction of the regular Seleucid army, which had by now returned from the East, was deployed against his forces. The latter, although better equipped than the Jewish sources care to admit, were outclassed by the more experienced Seleucids, however brave they might have been. Judas Maccabeus suffered two major defeats. In his last battle, he was out-generaled by his opponents and forced to fight on terrain that maximised the Seleucid advantages and the higher quality of their troops. He also feel into what seems to have been an elaborate trap to either catch or kill him and died in battle.

A third key point is that, as the author clearly shows, the Jewish sources are anything but un-biased, although they do contain valuable information that has to be carefully extracted and analysed. They almost systematically inflate Seleucid numbers and casualties and do the opposite for Jewish ones. There are several reasons for this. The most obvious one is to make the victory seem almost miraculous or the defeat more heroic. A related theme is to show God’s hand at work in favour of the insurgents when they win against improbable and often entirely impossible odds. Another feature shown by the author is that the First and the Second Book of the Maccabees, together with the works of Josephus, are quite vocal about the persecutions that triggered the Jewish insurrection, but much more discreet, if not entirely silent, when it gets to the various exactions and persecutions that Judas Maccabeus, his brothers and his followers enacted in turn against their enemies and rivals, starting with the Hellenised Jews. This in itself is quite valuable and courageous, especially since the Maccabeus brothers have a bit of a “hero status” in Israel and are sometimes seen as incapable of doing any wrong.

There are however also a few limitations to this book. One is that it is often excessively repetitive. Another is that it relies very much, and at times over-relies, on the author’s other book on “the Seleucid army”. This is for instance the case when discussing the Seleucid army’s ability to fight in mountainous terrain. Another point is that this text contains multiple references to the author’s views on Seleucid military organisation, numbers and battle tactics but does not discuss them, since this discussion is the subject of the other book. This other book happens to be, by and large, also clearer, including when depicting the battles between the Seleucid army and the army of Judas Maccabeus, and less expensive.

Four stars, but not five, for a book that is certainly worth reading, but preferably after you have read “the Seleucid army”.
