An excellent "short history" of the various conflicts in Vietnam starting in the early 19th century through to 1965.

Long on facts, long on dispassionate analysis. A "must read stand-alone" and excellent backgrounder also for anything else you will read as to the period in question.

After the historical discussion and analysis comes a series of important documents, necessary for an understanding of the period.

Essential.

I enjoy Longeval's book EMBERS OF WAR so I bought this as a companion piece. Although not as long or detailed as EOW, Origins met my expectations. It offers a concise history of how the U.S. got involved in Vietnam during the Kennedy-Johnson era. It includes a documents section as well as source citations.

Great as a textbook. A little dry for a general reader.

An excellent coverage of the political factors that brought us into vietnam and the factors that prevented us from leaving untill the political will of our politicians was destroyed.
