Civilization in the West blends social and political history into a fascinating narrative that brings history to life. The authors tell a compelling story of Western Civilization that is enhanced by an image-based approach. Pictorial chapter openers draw students in by illustrating a dominant theme of the chapter and exploring the dramatic impression each image makes in reinforcing that theme. The presentation of geography guides students around the changing contours of the West through both standard maps and Geographic Tours of Europe. 3 stars means: Ok/Good Book and would recommend in the right instances.

This book as it sets out to do gives a generic overview of Early Modern Europe. It lacks depth in many areas but this is to be expected of any textbook which seeks to chronicle the history of an entire continent through a period of 500 years.

It is written in what I would consider a very readable style which allows for students to really become engaged in the grand narrative of history.

Really better to be read along with the other course materials to develop what would hopefully be a deeper understanding of the time. Certain chapters have a more social/cultural focus which is a good change from the political driven narrative, but they are lacking in depth of discussion on the differing nature of the individual countries within Europe.

It really comes down to what you expect. If you want a normal textbook to give a narrative for the events then this book will work as well as the Hunt textbook or any other out there on the period.

This was the required book for my Western Civilization class over a year ago. Although my class did not rely so much on the book, it was still required reading and something I enjoyed very much. The topics in this book transition nicely from one to another. And while each topic is relatively short, each is thorough enough to give a solid understanding of different events throughout the West. There are also several nice drawings throughout the book that add to each section. Overall, this is something I would have read if not for school, so I was happy I got the chance to cover it.

While there are a lot of details in this book, they are not presented in a very linear order. Timeframes will jump between 500-1000 years from one paragraph to the next! It's hard to keep track of when, why, and how events occur with all the details and time jumping. Perhaps a good text for a high level college class or if you have previous knowledge on this part of history, but not good for intro level classes!

Pretty good and consistent with sources, could have used a bit more though

I had to get this book for school and it served me well in the course work. I also enjoyed reading it for leisure, for as a history buff, I love consuming any knowledge I can regarding history.
