Joseph Conlin was born in Philadelphia and educated at Villanova University (. He was a Fulbright Professor in Rome and Salzburg and was twice Visiting Senior Lecturer at the Social History Centre at Warwick University, England. For 30 years (60 semesters), with a few subtracted for sabbaticals, he taught between one and four sections of the United States history survey course each term, a total of about 200.

Joseph R. Conlin (born January 7, 1940) is an American historian and academic who has been serving as professor of American history at California State University at Chico. Conlin was born in Philadelphia where he attended public and parochial suburban schools and was educated at Villanova University (BA, 1961) and the University of Wisconsin (MA, 1962, PhD 1966).
