Martin Gilbert traces the Arab-Israeli conflict back as far as the reigns of King David and King Solomon by showing the size and scope of the lands under their control all the way to the 1990’s. If the reader was expecting a narrative book on the Arab-Israeli conflict, then this book is not for you. This is a book of maps; 146 maps total. Each map covers a specific space of time; for example map 1 is titled, “The Jews of Palestine before the Arab conquest 1000 BC -636 AD. The map is lined out with various demarcations showing areas of control for specific times and at least one narrative box with a concise explanation of the information being described by the map.
This book is an excellent book for a Near-Eastern studies graduate student looking for a reference book that cartographically illustrates over three thousand years of history to help them more fully understand the political, religious, and historical issues surrounding this conflict.

I have been reading different books on the Arab-Israeli conflict and I found this book very helpful in visualizing not only maps but also key dates in the history of this conflict.

I highly recommend this book as an additional reference for better understanding this conflict that continues to affect our world.

Querlaca
Sir Martin Gilbert, the official biographer of Winston Churchill, has produced numerous books of this type. As usual, the maps are clear and the notes included on each one are informative, accurate, and enlightening.

The book was ok, but it did not come in on time and I therefore did not get a chance to really use it. I needed it before I left the country, but it did not come in until almost 2 weeks after I left.
