This inspired Aczel's book The Riddle of the Compass. When Aczel was 21, he studied at the University of California, Berkeley. He graduated with a BA in mathematics in 1975, and received a Master of Science in 1976. Several years later Aczel earned a P. in statistics from the University of Oregon. He was a speaker at La Ciudad de las Ideas (The City of Ideas), Puebla, Mexico, in 2008, 2010, and 2011 Works. ISBN 978-1-594-48956-3. I found this book to be fascinating Aczel recounts the "East-side Story" in the early days of the 20th century paleoanthropology and centers it around Teilhard de Chardin.

I found this book to be fascinating. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin was an intelligent, complex man. I admire his hard work as a scientist, his devotion to the Jesuits and his god, and his tenacity in trying to get the church to accept new ideas. The book covered many interesting topics: cave art, the evolution of man, fosils, Peking man, and the other scientists who dug with Teilard. Aczel recounts the "East-side Story" in the early days of the 20th century paleoanthropology and centers it around Teilhard de Chardin.

It also became a provocative piece of evidence in the roiling debate over creationism versus evolution. For Teilhard, both a scientist and man of God, the discovery also exposed a deeply personal conflict between the new science and his faith. He was commanded by his superiors to deny all scientific evidence that went against biblical teachings, and his writing and lectures were censored by the Vatican.

Documents the efforts of an esteemed French Jesuit priest to confront the struggle between science and religion upon his 1929 discovery of the Peking Man pre-human skull that represented a missing link between erect hunting apes and the human race's Cro-Magnon ancestors, a finding he was ordered to deny as scientific evidence refuting biblical teachings. 40,000 first printing.

The author does a great job of taking a scientific subject like paleanthroplogy, which could be daunting for many readers, and turning it into an understandable, enjoyable work on the study of our human ancestors. It is also the fascinating (and somewhat tragic) personal story of the Jesuit priest and Scientist Teilhard de Chardin, who contributed greatly to our present-day understanding of evolution and how it is reconciled with our beliefs in God. I am a product of a Jesuit education, and though I greatly admire the Jesuits, their history on this subject and with Fr. de Chardin is quite disappointing. It is a history they apparently are loathe to face up to and admit even today. Any book that contributes to my knowledge base in a positive way gets two thumbs up from me!

Really liked this book. Found the history around the discovery of ancient human beings to be fascinating and enjoyed learning more about Teilhard de Chardin. Written very much like a story, so didn't feel I was plowing through someone's research paper. Well done. I recommend it.

An enjoyable and entertaining read on both the elements of human evolution and the life of Pierre Tielhard de Chardin. Well researched, and typical of Aczel's other books, the narrative flows well, integrating science with the scientist and humanizing otherwise peripheral or obscure people and discoveries. A quick, enjoyable read.

From its description, this book appeared to have a lot of elements in which I am interested, and the beginning of the book was absolutely riveting. Unfortunately, as I continued reading, the message and story got a bit repetitive and dull.

Set in the early- to mid- 1900's, the book follows the life of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, a Jesuit priest and paleontologist who was part of the research team that discovered the famous "Peking Man". While the mechanics of the story regarding the search for fossils was of some interest, the inner struggle of Teilhard to reconcile evolution with the teachings of the Catholic Church at the time was riveting, at least in the beginning portion of the book.

Unfortunately, at about 50% of the way through the book, the drama just got repetitive. And I can't help but wonder how much of the trouble he had with the Church was related to his concept of the `noosphere' and how much was actually due to his stance on evolution. All in all, it's worth a read if you are interested in the material, but the book loses steam about half way through.

This is the book that introduced me to de Chardan. He honored his commitment to obedience by surrendering his ego to Church authority. I don't think I could have that level of obedience but I learned things from his example. I am thankful for this book.

This book about Pierre Teilhard is different and entertaining. Aczel presents the life and struggle of this man against the misunderstanding and fear of his times revealing us more than the events, all in a clear narrative

Great book - great author!

Straighforward biography of an important twentieth century philopher, theologian and scientists.
