On the Genealogy of Morals (Oxford World's Classics). The book is a splendid display of erudition and helps us to understand the extent of Nietzsche's admiration of the Greeks. One of his key formulations is how tragedy enabled the Greeks to nevertheless see life, in spite of the suffering entailed in it, as indestructibly powerful and joyous.

Nietzsche questions moral certainties by showing that religion and science .

The Genealogy is the most sustained of Nietzsche's later works and offers one of the fullest expressions of his characteristic concerns.

On the Genealogy of Morality: A Polemic (German: Zur Genealogie der Moral: Eine Streitschrift) is an 1887 book by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche

On the Genealogy of Morality: A Polemic (German: Zur Genealogie der Moral: Eine Streitschrift) is an 1887 book by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. It consists of a preface and three interrelated treatises ('Abhandlungen' in German) that expand and follow through on concepts Nietzsche sketched out in Beyond Good and Evil (1886). The three treatises trace episodes in the evolution of moral concepts with a view to confronting "moral prejudices", specifically those of Christianity and Judaism. Therefore, in slave morality the world becomes ugly and banal because the beautiful is evil.

By contrast, they On The Genealogy of Morals is made up of three essays, all of which question and critique the value of our moral judgments based on a genealogical method whereby Nietzsche examines the origins and meanings of our different moral concepts. The first essay, "'Good and Evil,' 'Good and Bad'" contrasts what Nietzsche calls "master morality" and "slave morality.

Translated by Douglas Smith. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1996. The Jews made the powerless into the good, putting the world as it should be on its head. This is the slave revolt in morals, not yet two thousand years old. Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) was one of Germany’s most controversial and influential philosophical lights. Nietzsche wrote the bulk of his works in the six years before he was institutionalized because his mental health collapsed. First Essay, §8. The Jewish conspiracy of revenge culminated in Jesus.

On the Genealogy of Morals (1887) is a book about interpretation and the history of ethics which raises profoundly disquieting issues about the violence of both. This is the most sustained of Nietzsche's later works and offers one of the fullest expressions of his characteristic concerns. The introduction places his ideas within the cultural context of his own time and stresses the relevance of his work for a contemporary audience.About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. One needs to read any of Nietzsche's works several times before one begins to understand him. Be patient, it is all worth it.
