Andrei Pavlov and Maureen Perrie have produced an excellent and very welcome biography of the fascinating and elusive Ivan the Terrible.

Sergei Bogatyrev, SEER, 82, 4, 2004. Ivan the Terrible is a valuable work for all scholars of Russian or early modern European history, and will be particularly useful for undergraduate students of this period.

Andrei Pavlov, Maureen Perrie. London: Pearson Longman, 2003. Andrei Pavlov of St. Petersburg and Maureen Perrie of Birmingham have written not only a very impressive synthesis of scholarship on the reign of Ivan IV, in itself a great accomplishment, but also a monograph which presents a coherent thesis concerning the relationship of Ivan's rule to Russia's political evolution. The authors, consistent with the series of which this book is a part, focus on questions of territorial expansion, the relationship of the ruler to the elite, and the mythology of power, especially in pictorial evidence and ritual.

Andrei Pavlov of St. Petersburg and Maureen Perrie of Birmingham have written not only a very impressive synthesis of scholarship on the reign of Ivan IV, in itself a great accomplishment, but also a monograph which presents . . This is far and away the most readable survey of Ivan's reign in print in English In conclusion, Pavlov and Perrie have written a work which will appeal to specialists and nonspecialists alike, and will provide much food for thought about the still little-understood but always intriguing reign of Ivan the Terrible.

Maureen Perrie, Andrei Pavlov. This is the first major re-assessment of Ivan the Terrible to be published in the West in the post-Soviet period. Ivan is best remembered for his reign of terror, the book pays due attention to the horrors of his executions, tortures and repressions, especially in the period of the oprichnina (1565-72), when he mysteriously divided his realm into two parts, one of which was under the direct control of the tsar and his oprichniki (bodyguard).

This is the first major re-assessment of Ivan the Terrible to be published in the West in the post-Soviet period. It breaks away from older stereotypes of the tsar – whether as ‘crazed tyrant’ and ‘evil genius’, on the one hand, or as a ‘great and wise statesman’, on the other – to provide a more balanced picture. It examines the ways in which Ivan’s policies contributed to the creation of Russia’s distinctive system of unlimited monarchical rule.

This work argues that the often gruesome forms assumed by the terror reflected not only Ivan’s personal cruelty and sadism, but also his religious views about the divinely ordained right of the tsar to punish his treasonous subjects, just as sinners were punished in Hell.

Primarily chronological in its organisation, the book focuses on three main aspects of Ivan’s power: the territorial expansion of the state, the mythology, rituals and symbols of monarchy; and the development of the autocratic system of rule.

The book, in my opinion, is very good. Do keep in mind, it's not a historical fiction, but rather scolarly(is that a word? :) work, which is pretty thorough. Do give it a chance.

I read this book as a requirement for an upper division history course. From the introduction, I thought this book would be interesting. But unless you like to wade through pages upon pages of Russian names, I would select a different source to learn about Ivan the Terrible. Even though names are important in history, this book seemed to insert names many times when they were not necessary to understanding the point being made. The flow of the narrative was also severely broken up. You will find yourself reading a paragraph with fifteen different names in it, and at the end, you will ask what was the paragraph even trying to say. Overall, I was disappointed in the book. If it was not a required reading, I would have not finished it. From other sources that I have read, this period in Russian history is filled with exciting and intriguing events, yet you would not know that from this book.

Katishi
This is a short biography of one of the most well-known of the Czars of the Russian Empire. However, as well known as Ivan the Terrible is, there is not much actual accuracy in what is "known" or believed about the life of Ivan the Terrible. This small biography aims to correct the myths that have grown up around the life of Ivan the Terribl.

Book came in really bad conditions. Pages were missing and it clearly had water damage. Some of it could not be read and the book smelled bad.

This book had some good information, but it was really dry and I had trouble staying focused on / interested in it. I also prefer biographies that are a bit more about the person, and less just about the political atmosphere (although I get that it's difficult to really focus on the person when there aren't many reliable sources).
