Mary Shelley's life, especially the first half of it, was as sad, melodramatic, improbable, and even tragic as any sentimental nineteenth century "sensation" novel. Given her background, Mary's intellectual prowess and literary talents are not surprising. Her father, William Godwin, was one of the most famous and versatile thinkers and writers of his time, having penned a very important thousand-page political tract, Enquiry concerning Political Justice, and a popular, provocative novel of pursuit and guilt, Caleb Williams, in the space of two years (1793-94).
PATRICK SANDFORD is the artistic director of the Nuffield Theatre Southampton. Married to the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley she was most famous for creating the gothic novel Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus. He has adapted several works for the stage including A Christmas Carol and The Wind in the Willows. MARY SHELLEY (1797-1851) was a novelist, dramatist, essayist biographer and travel writer. The novel was written during an infamous summer spent at the Villa Diodati, near Lake Geneva, with the notorious Lord Byron when Mary was just eighteen. Customers who viewed this item also viewed.

I could not understand why men who knew all about good and evil could hate and kill each other. I learnt other things too.
