Recording the economic history of South Africa in the mid- to late-19th century, Colin Bundy’s The Rise of the South African Peasantry became the definitive narrative detailing Africans’ successful economic transition from subsistence farming to a productive and entrepreneurial peasant class. Helen Bradford found several discrepancies in both Bundy’s evidence and his methodology, and questioned Bundy’s conclusions in her response, Peasants, Historians, and Gender.
