They built huge, sumptuous palaces filled with rich art then vanished into myth, remembered only in Greek tales of the evil emperor Minos who fed young Athenian nobles to his Minotaur in Daedalus's labyrinth until his own daughter Ariadne helped Theseus slay the beast and escape. Totally hooked, I studied ancient history and classics at McGill University and then focused on the Minoans for my PhD at Edinburgh University. In 1979 I was initiated to the tense thrill of delivering ancient artifactsfrom the ground, like some tireless midwife, with a British team at Knossos.

Sir Arthur Evans and his assistant Duncan Mackenzie identified sixteen pottery groups from the Old Palace at Knossos. A detailed new typology of the pottery is therefore presented, based on variations in technology, form and design.

The book is divided into three chapters, followed by the pottery catalog, various concordances, and the plates. The first chapter addresses the archaeological and stratigraphic contexts of the sixteen find groups treated by M. The difficulty here is that by recent standards, there was a lack of vertical stratigraphic control in the early Knossos excavations. Since the standard periodization of Middle Minoan pottery is based precisely on these groups, there is a danger of circular reasoning in any reassessment of them

The main aims of the research which led to the publication of this book were to place the ceramics from the first major palace period at Knossos, in a 'relative and continuous sequence, based on their immediate archaeological context'. MacGillivray reassesses much of the material assigned by Evans and Mackenzie. Extensive appendices detailing the ceramic types and provenance, with many black and white plates.
