This book comprehensively documents SAC tactical aircraft markings from the organization's inception in 1946 to the end of the tail-marking era in April 1953, a period when the marking schemes included large tail markings, vivid squadron identification markings and attractive, colourful unit insignia. The SAC's history is described along with the evolution of its aircraft markings policy, basic definitions on aircraft markings terminology, and individual unit sections on SAC's bombardment, strategic reconnaissance and fighter groups and wings.

Aircraft Markings is Rick Rodrigues' examination of the history of aircraft markings and marking policy in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) from 1946 to 1953-the early years of the command's history (SAC was formed on 26 March 1946). A secretive organization, SAC rarely allowed its early aircraft to be photographed. When they did, they often cropped out unit markings and other identifying markings before releasing the photographs for publication

In the aftermath of World War II, the Continental Air Command was redesignated as the Strategic Air Command (SAC) as part of a plan to organize the Army Air Forces around three new organizations based on strategic, tactical and air defense missions. Nearly everything about the SAC was secretive—its capabilities, strengths, order of battle and unit identities. Its aircraft were rarely photographed and those images that were captured revealed little information. This book comprehensively documents SAC tactical aircraft markings from the organization’s inception in 1946 to the end of the tail-marking era in April 1953, a period when the marking schemes included large tail markings, vivid squadron identification markings and attractive, colorful unit insignia. The SAC’s history is described along with the evolution of its aircraft markings policy; basic definitions on aircraft markings terminology; and individual unit sections on SAC’s bombardment, strategic reconnaissance and fighter groups and wings. The text is heavily illustrated and features many never before seen photographs of SAC aircraft in full war paint.

the book was fine as far as it goes, but it really needed a large selection of color photosuseful but not essential

Though the early years of the Strategic Air Command have been fairly well documented, the markings carried by SAC aircraft of that period haven't. Happily for SAC fans, Rick Rodrigues stepped up to the bat, did a monumental job of researching and has produced what will, in all likelihood, by THE definitive book on SAC markings.

After an opening chapter traces the formation of SAC, Rodrigues discusses basic USAF markings, the combat aircraft operated by SAC and the development of SAC's marking policies and practices before presenting an in-depth look at the individual SAC groups/wings, devoting separate chapters to bomb and recce groups/wings, fighter wings, separate squadrons and, finally, those units involved in 'Operation Crossroads.'

Rodrigues presents the material in a straightforward, easy-to-understand fashion. The narrative is complimented by many rare photographs and aircraft marking diagrams. It's really a commendable piece of work.

Having said that, the book is horribly overpriced at $85.00! Had Rodrigues' book included color profiles and/or photographs, that price tag might have been justified. In all probability, the high price will probably scare off most aviation buffs. What was McFarland thinking of?

'Heavy metal' bomber enthusiasts and modellers should enjoy AIRCRAFT MARKINGS OF THE STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND, 1946-1953...if they can afford it. Given the enormous research effort Rodrigues put into this subject and the nicely-done end result, he deserves six stars. McFarland, however, gets 0 stars. Highly recommended.
