I recently bought a copy for my mate, a non-biologist who wanted an authoritative yet accessible text on Earth history and evolution. I own two copies of this book myself -- one that I keep in my classroom while the other remains safe in my home library. Quite simply, this is one of the ten best books on Earth history/evolution I have ever read and would recommend it to anyone desiring a single source that delineates the astronomical, geological, environmental, and biological events that led up to the way this planet is and has been. I have used it extensively as one of my sources, both as a science adviser/technical writer for a company that built museum exhibitry (including animated dinosaurs, whales, extinct mammals and sea animals) during the late 1980s/early 1990s and as a middle school and high school biology teacher for 16 years. Part of me wishes Mr. Calder would come up with a new edition, but then again, not that much has changed (other than the increasingly-negative human impact and our understanding of it!) in Earth history since 1982.

The book arrived on time and in good condition. It met all my expectations. I'm teaching a Community College course on Big History. The information in this book was very helpful.

An excellent tool.

But the book made me feel uneasy in one way. How does one measure within oneself the meaning of these various times and timescales? What do the numbers say to us? Are they simply meaningless ciphers, figures we learn? In other words there is some disassociation felt on my part here between the ' scientific information' presented and the human meaning it can be given. Perhaps that is not really relevant to what the book was meant to be. But this is one of the reasons I had that Whitman like feeling given in the poem " When I heard the learned Astronomer" the famous ' turned in silence and looked at the stars'.

This book has three parts. The first part explains how scientists measure the ages of ancient objects that they observe, and how they correllate these measurements. The second part describes the big bang, using a time scale that increases exponentially. The third part, which is the bulk of the book, summarizes the events of all time, from the big bang up to 1980.
Despite its age, the book is remarkable up-to-date, and a real pleasure to read. This book I keep to both read for pleasure and refer to.
