Reissued 1991 with a foreword by T. A. Holland) . Behind the scientifically accurate study and publication of The Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus, the most important document in the history of science surviving from the pre-Greek age of mankind (seventeenth century . lies a story as remarkable as the papyrus itself. Early in 1862, during his residence in Thebes, Mr. Edwin Smith, a man of great intellectual gifts, purchased what is now known as the Edwin Smith Surgical papyrus. Volume 2 contains collotype facsimiles of the Papyrus, which originally was in a continuous roll but for the sake of convenience has now been cut into columns of text.

Book was fine and on time

Mr.jeka
This is a copy of Breasted's rarely found book from 1929. The papyrus is the oldest known surviving work on medicine from the ancient world. As a note, Volume I The Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus: Hieroglyphic Transliteration, Translation And Commentary V1 has the translations, and that may be enough for many. It's filled with ancient case studies of practical remedies for setting broken jawbones to brain injuries and insights to the circulatory system; not to mention "magical incantations & female problems." One reason for this purchase was to view the beautiful hieratic inscriptions so rarely seen. Bad idea.

The disappointing side of this volume is that the plates are virtually impossible to view. The publishers of this reprint have added a statement that regardless of the poor state of the plates it's still worth printing. On scientific grounds only I would agree. The positive side is that, if you do not read hieratic, a complete hieroglyphic transcription is included. Unfortunately, for those who do not read Egyptian hieroglyphs, there are no translations. They can only be found in Volume One.

If you're looking for a complete color re-print of the original papyrus, there are only two places to find it: 1) The Art of Medicine in Ancient Egypt (Metropolitan Museum of Art Series) a complimentary volume that augmented the New York Metropolitan Museum's exhibit of the same name in 2005 and 2) The exhibit catalogue which is lavishly illustrated & includes complete color photographs of the papyrus and full translations, as well as the other awesome artifacts from the showing. Get your hands on it if you can!!

All in all, this is great for students of Egyptian study & not for the lay person or casual reader. Buy "Ancient Medicine" as mentioned above for a happier overall experience.
