Collins' books still enjoy wide popularity, especially mystery and detective novels such as The Woman in White, The Moonstone, and Armadale. Collins was also a good friend of Charles Dickens and often collaborated with him on plays and short stories. Some of Collins’ classics include The Moonstone, Armadale, and No Name, but this was also one of his acclaimed works. Mystery & Detective.

A Rogue's Life (Pocket classics) Collins, Wilkie Paperback. The Yellow Mask and Other Stories (Pocket Classics) By Wilkie Collins.

Classic Wilkie Collins. To me this book wasn't as enjoyable as other works by Collins.

The relationships are looser than other Wilkie Collins’ novels where uptight Victorian ways and manners are often part of the storyline. Classic Wilkie Collins. However, it was short and in the classic Collins style.

William Wilkie Collins (8 January 1824 – 23 September 1889) was an English novelist, playwright and short story writer best known for The Woman in White (1859) and The Moonstone (1868). The last has been called the first modern English detective novel. Born to the family of a painter, William Collins, in London, he grew up in Italy and France, learning French and Italian. He began work as a clerk for a tea merchant.

Gerard Roylake returns from years of banishment to take up his inheritance surrounded by strangers. A meeting with Cristel Toller brings back childhood memories, but also introduces him to a sinister man known only as The Lodger. Besotted with Cristel, he exerts a peculiar influence on everyone.

Since reading Wilkie Collins' book, Woman In White, I have been hooked. I love his style, his way with words and his unique way of inserting unexpected twists and turns into a tale. This book was no exception.

At times it is difficult to tell the "good guys from the bad guys" and Collins is a master of leading you to the precipice and throwing the written curve ball. In this story, I missed that curve, absolutely did not see it coming and was delighted when all was revealed.

This is a book I would enjoy reading again. Again, the price of this book, makes it a MUST read.

What makes this special is that while Wilkie Collins may appear to have a "formula" for his stories, it is not as blatant as a Harlequin Romance or Danielle Steele's stories. In this book, the story gets on with it, it's not a hash and rehash of a lack of communication or misunderstanding between the main characters - the story moves the entire time. You won't be bored and you will not have to suspend your belief system in order to get through the story.

Now, if you are reading this and waiting for me to tell you what the book is about - don't hold your breath - I'm not going to do it. If you want the story without reading the book, get the Cliff Notes. It's the end of summer, the skies are blue, there's still time for the beach or the pool or the chaise lounge on the patio or deck - have a staycation and go back to a different time and visit...the price of this ticket on Amazon - can't beat it.

Just be aware that The Guilty River is a short/tiny book of just over 80 pages, the size of a pamphlet, and not the size of some of the other Collin's novels. Keep this in mind to deterimine if the price is worth it. Book is so small they can't print the name of it or the author's name on the binder.

As with all Wilkie Collins's shorter works, it disappoints. He either needed to write books of at least 500 pages or else have Dickens stand by his side.
