This is a description of the network of bio-medical studies initiated by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) that took place in the Antarctic in the southern summer of 1980/1981 - the very first Antarctic expedition to have the study of humans as its primary aim. The results, which analyze men's reactions to living in isolation and exposed to arduous Antarctic fieldwork, show the importance of monitoring the whole range of human responses to hostile environments. They lend themselves to extrapolation to numerous circumstances created by current developments, for example, isolated groups who might be submerged for long periods or life in space stations. These studies of the whole man in relation to his environment are in marked contrast to many other physiological and psychological experiments which involve testing under laboratory conditions for reactions to a narrow group of stimuli and a limited number of variables.
