Poorly designed and poorly performing Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) are rampant throughout the process industries. They can degrade safety, production, quality, and profitability. Time after time, they are cited as contributing factors to major industrial accidents.

The book contains experience and intellectual property that has never before been released, It is jointly authored by 2 companies, PAS and User Centered Design Services (UCDS), who have decades of experience in process control, HMI design, and human factors. The book reveals many poor yet common HMI practices, provides the justification for change, and shows in great detail the best way to design and implement a truly High Performance HMI. It contains over 90 color illustrations, plus many relevant real world examples, anecdotes, and surprises. This is not your usual boring engineering text!

The book presents a good set of guidelines for building a process facility HMI - it is so good at that that a web search of white papers and guides for constructing HMIs often ends up with a multitude of papers citing this book. The book is focused on process facility needs - keeping your display uncongested so your operator can see an overall view of what is going on, then providing the operator the ability to drill down to access information when and where something out of the ordinary takes place. I am trying to digest the contents then adapt the information for building OEM machine HMIs, which are a different animal but share many of the basic principles.

Excellent read on best practices for designing an HMI. This isn't a how to for making an HMI, but explains what the best practices are when designing a good HMI and why these are considered best practices. The book focuses mostly on process control and plant control HMI systems, but the best practices in this book can be carried over to all fields of HMI design.

Zavevidi
Great book on HMI design. Works very well in conjunction with the ASM book: " Effective Console Operator HMI Design". Highly recommended.

Lightbinder
This is an excellent book. I have worked in the area of systems with HMI interfaces for many years. I have seen a lot of designs that were not effective but couldn't put my finger on why. Now I know the essence of good design,,, the sprinkling of humor is refreshing as well

Vareyma
Good but very large process oriented. A large emphasis on safety and alarming systems.
Deemphasizes process visualization. Has many valid points.

This book will change your life if your develop graphic screens for SCADA or process control systems. It presents a great philosophy based on human factors research as well as many examples. A must read.

I have purchased this book in the past. Great book to help provide an understanding of HP HMI for process controls. Amazon great with delivery.

Book was just like described.
