16 quotes from Joyce Haber: 'For me, the worst sin is hypocrisy. The sinner's the bastard who hires the assassin. 'Haven't you heard, the Dread Scott decision has been overturned?" "Not out here, baby," Warren replied, without a second's hesitation. For that matter, not in Washington, either, or in Detroit, or at the Vatican, or at the Harvard Law School. People are objects and we use them. Out here, I like to think, the trappings surrounding the transaction are a little more attractive.

Joyce Haber (1931–1993) was an American gossip columnist who worked for the Los Angeles Times. Haber was one of Hollywood's last powerful gossip columnists who "were capable of canonizing a film or destroying a star". She took over the old job of Hedda Hopper. Haber left the Times in 1976 to write a roman a clef titled The Users. It was her only novel, rose to the top of the New York Times Bestseller List, and was made into a tele-film with the same name.

I've discovered the book because of my interest with actress Jaclyn Smith when she appeared in the tv-movie version of the book. But the book is definitely jucier and highly strung. It's well written, page by page and very stylish. Ms. Haber's writing is very bold and straight to the point. If you need a book about Hollywood then this is a must but make sure you're off the following day because it will keep you up 'till the last page.

Her age was variously given as 60 or 62. The cause was kidney and liver failure, said a spokesman for the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Miss Haber and her syndicated column played a role in a sensational case in the 1970's that involved the actress Jean Seberg, who suffered a premature labor and later committed suicide

This was an eye opening book for me when I first read it way back in the day. I saw it listed and I am happy
with the book, which arrived in excellent condition and most of all on time!

I ordered this book because I noticed that Dominic Dunne had what they called a follow-up to this. Since I like to read books in sequence, I started with this one.

I guess I'm going to be the odd person out so far, but, for me, this book was so awful that I just stopped reading it. It was so boring that I had to force myself to go on to the next page.

At the moment, I'm reading Dominic Dunne's, "The Winners," and have discovered that one doesn't have to have read Haber's book in order to enjoy Dunne's book. My advice is to skip this one and read Dunne's.

Over the top trashy novel.

Before Jackie Collins began with Hollywood Wives, there was this book that depicted all the dastardly deeds in Hollywood. First off, if you liked the film, beware that you may not enjoy the book. In the same vein, if you enjoyed this book, you may not enjoy the film. The two are only the same in title and the names of the characters. Other than that, the movie and book are nothing alike.

Onto the review of the book: Intriguing, interesting, amusing, at times trashy and entertaining. The opening grabs you, then, it moves slowly and then takes off with great amusement. The book is well written. The characters are all well drawn. Some are despicable; others are downright stupid. During the party scenes, you swear you are right there as a guest. The heroine, Elena is smart in the manner that she knows how to use others to get what she wants, but she is more than stupid by marrying men she doesn't love, or even like to get `position or status. She goes from one control freak, sadist to another. Is she a masochist? Quite likely. The book is enjoyable to read about the ins and outs of Hollywood and all is too accurate. One can tell that the author Joyce Haber knew the ins and outs and had no trouble revealing all in this book. She was a former child actress and gossip columnist before her death. Too bad that this was her only book. Of course, she paved the way for others, as Jackie Susann did too.
Overall, a trashy but fun read. If you're into Jackie Collins Hollywood novels, there is no reason not to enjoy this one. After all, this one preceded Ms. Collins novels.

I excitedly ordered this book, after having read the “sequel” first by Dominick Dunne, whose books I can’t get enough of. Needless to say, this Haber prequel was a waste of time and also much dirtier than I expected.
Also realized you don’t have to read this one to grasp Dunne’s one, which can stand on its own.
