Curtis's Botanical Magazine has been published continuously since 1787, although there have been several series within the overall sequence. From 1984 to 1994 the magazine appeared under the title of The Kew Magazine. In 1995 the publication returned to its roots and the historical and popular name Curtis's Botanical Magazine again took precedence.

Cymbidiums are among the most important and popular orchids in horticulture. Starting in late Victorian England, the variety of form and colour in the species encouraged hybridisation that has provided a great diversity of novelties for the nursery trade over the years. They are versatile plants, marketed as cut-flowers, buttonholes and as pot plants, producing many large, long-lasting flowers.Cymbidium growing in the Far East can be traced back to the time of Confucius (about 500 BC), but the first species were only introduced to Europe and China at the end of the 18th century. Relatively few species were seen in cultivation in Britain until the time of the Industrial Revolution, which provided both the leisure time and the money for an explosion of interest in orchid growing. From the mid-19th century onwards, extensive exploration and collection of new species took place. The genus Cymbidium currently comprises some 52 species distributed throughout south and east Asia, the Malay Archipelago and north and east Australia.A revised classification of the genus and an assessment of specific delimitation and nomenclature within the genus are presented in this monograph. The evidence from DNA data has clarified the relationships and classification of the species. The resurgence of interest in Cymbidium species has highlighted the taxonomic questions that still remain in the genus. The recent rush of new species names in the literature is assessed and nomenclature is clarified.Extensive fieldwork in tropical and subtropical Asia, the Malay Archipelago and Australia has allowed the examination of many species in their wild habitats, contributing valuable information concerning the ecology, natural variation of wild populations and conservation assessments for Cymbidium species, and are provided here for the first time.Cymbidiums are easy to grow, undoubtedly one of the main reasons for their popularity in horticulture. Suitable environmental conditions and composts for cultivation are recommended, while detailed cultivation techniques for the species are discussed by Michael Tibbs, a leading commercial orchid grower.

Beautiful book about a new orchid I am hoping to keep alive and thrive! Probably more complex information than I need or will use. I'd say an orchid specialist would appreciate the detailed information therein. Lovely dust jacket, and in Mylar plastic ...very happy with seller as well. I have yet, however,to really sit down with this book.

I have been searching for this book for years and eventually I am very proud to have it added to my collection.
It is a very informative piece of work from one of the authorities in the orchid world, Phillip Cribb.
This book will teach you more about the history, Morphology, hybrid uses and much more of the oldest grown orchid genus, namely Cymbids.
Please note this book is not however a Monograph of all the relevant Cymbid species but a lot are talked about and shown in beautiful photographs and spectacular water colour depicting not only the flowers, but also foliage and growth habit.
Defenately a Must Have in any Orchid species enthusiasts or serious Cymbidium growers book shelf.

The information is good in this book but it is hard to use. The publisher chose an unintuitive typeface for each species listing which makes it a challenge to find the species you want to read about. The photo section is also a bit strange as there are numerous hybrids included that don't jive with the text. Weird that such little things like this can make or break a book. I think it needs to be republished.

Very good reference book

The genus Cymbidium has never been adequately covered within a single volume. A new monograph by Drs Du Puy and Cribb, for the first time, brings together all of the pertinent information on these important orchids. The introductory chapters cover the structure and anatomy of the species, their chromosome numbers, pollination and floral fragrances, distribution, biogeography and evolution, their ethnobotanical uses and how to grow them.

The book traces the history of Cymbidium in cultivation, going back at least 2,000 years in the Far East. A chapter on the history of hybridization in the genus, with particular reference to the significance of the species, has been specially written by Ernest Hetherington and Andy Easton, two of the world's foremost authorities on the development of horticultural Cymbidiums.

The main part of the text comprises a complete taxonomic account of all known species in the genus. The authors recognize forty-four species, and have used modern biological techniques as well as classical methods to arrive at their decisions. Most of the species are known to the authors in cultivation, and the majority have been studied by them in the wild.
