The Privacy Card book. The re-issue of a technology-based book 16 years after it was originally. Here Eaton and Etzioni join in contending that some trade-offs are long overdue in the now pressing interest of the public good.

Amitai Etzioni (/ˈæmɪtaɪ ˌɛtsiˈoʊni/; born Werner Falk, January 4, 1929) is a German-born Israeli and American sociologist, best known for his work on socioeconomics and communitarianism. He founded the Communitarian Network, a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to supporting the moral, social, and political foundations of society.

Privacy Card: A Low Cost Strategy to Combat Terrorism, with a foreword by Amitai Etzioni (Lanham, M. Rowman and . Rowman and Littlefield, 2003). The Card Carrying American: Security, Privacy and the National ID Card Controversy. Totowa, NJ: Allanheld and Rowman, May 1986).

The Privacy Card: A Low Cost Strategy to Combat Terrorism. Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefield, 2003. Amitai Etzioni agrees and provides a foreword to this study; he predictably and reasonably insists that biometric identification would hinder terrorists, eliminate fraud, control criminals, and do a lot of good, while doing little harm. An unforgeable national ID system would certainly make some things better, safer, faster, but the little harm takes us one step further from democracy and a bit closer to panoptic control and totalitarian repression.

In a new foreword to this re-issued book, national ID proponent Amitai Etzioni says that it lays out the issues and the evidence in a most compelling way. Not true. The Privacy Card, authored by now-Professor Emeritus Joseph Eaton at the University of Pittsburgh, was first published as Card-Carrying Americans in 1986.

This bibliography provides information sources about terrorism, terrorist groups and the terror typologies. It is not comprehensive and only a starting point, since the situation is changing daily. Many of the books could have legitimately been listed in more than one of the subsections below, which highlights the somewhat articificial nature of the categories I have set up. I appended to each subsection below subject headings that will enable the reader to explore the topic further as well. The Privacy Card: A Low Cost Strategy to Combat Terro-. The re-issue of a technology-based book 16 years after it was originally published is an unusual event. The events of September 11th, 2001 were more than unusual and have elicited a variety of responses from the technological to the philosophical. One response―the issue of a secure and tamper-resistant process of personal identification for U.S. residents and citizens―is neither new nor difficult to implement from a technological standpoint. The idea of a national ID card has been hotly debated (and rejected) for years, but in the wake of September 11th, its time may finally have come. This revised edition of what was originally published as Card-Carrying Americans is being published for its emphasis on the privacy issues posed by the book's proposals, an updated introduction, and a new foreword. Author Joseph W. Eaton discusses the social value of a national ID card, the problems of technology, the threat to privacy, possible safeguards, and the effects of different policies on society and the Bill of Rights.Eaton addresses some of the same "tough choice" questions that foreword writer Amitai Etzioni addresses in his influential book, Limits to Privacy. Here Eaton and Etzioni join in contending that some trade-offs are long overdue in the now pressing interest of the public good.
