Stephen Pevar's book is an indispensable part of the toolkit for American Indian lawyers, leaders, and scholars. The title is misleading however. The Rights of Indians and Tribes has never been part of the American idiom.

Unfortunately, the . has its own history of human rights abuses ranging from slavery and Nisei internment camps to the way it has handled the indigenous population. Slavery has ended and the internment camps have closed. Unfortunately the plight of American Indians has never been fully established and is ever evolving.

Incredibly well researched and full of things we probably never knew. The title is misleading however. The Rights of Indians and Tribes has never been part of the American idiom. This book exposes the genocide of Indians by Andrew Jackson - the same guy who is on the $20 bill - to the attempt to force assimilation on American Indians by Dwight Eisenhower who stole land and successful businesses in the name of 'becoming' American citizens as opposed to recognizing them as citizens of sovereign nations within US borders.

As a member of many established Native Law and Education Associations and Societies, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is engaged in even the slightest element of Native Law and Politics. Encompassing every detail that Native Law is defined as, you simply CAN NOT go wrong by reading Mr. Pevar's book. Clear and concise explanations that give detail and omit confusion will leave you with a well endowed understanding of Native case law and the political ties to our Native history. By definition, a MUST READ for any knowledgeable Native American today.
