Between 1998 and 2004, intercountry adoption increased by 42 per cent. This article focuses on the remarkable changes in the number of intercountry adoptions (ICAs) in the first decade of the new mil-lennium (Table 1). In the 50 years or so following the initiation of transracial international adoption from Korea in 1953, global numbers of children moving for ICA had steadily increased to an estimated total worldwide of over 45,000 a year.
