The book is well printed on good paper, in a style and manner that many definitive works on English drawings and watercolours might well emulate. As such it is an excellent and needed production. Very few drawings, it seems, survive from the first half of the eighteenth century. The soil of that period was not very fertile for artists.

American Master Drawings and Watercolors: A History of Works on Paper from Colonial Times to the Present, New York, 1976, p. Jeffrey Brown has written, "The watercolor A Pensive Moment is perhaps the most successful of these paintings of women in nature. Organized by the controlling eye of the painter, the subject is more than a nostalgic tonal photograph. It becomes instead a general statement synthesizing the sentimental attitude of the time.

Doomwarden
This has become a classic for watercolor artists. Gives the history of the medium and a Who's Who of the early adopters.

This book is both a text and exhibition catalogue
This was The Drawing Society's contribution to the American Bicentenary
The exhibition was at the Whitney Museum of American Art and two other sites
The full title gives an idea of the coverage of the exhibition
"American Master Drawings and Watercolors--A History of Works on Paper from Colonial Times to the Present
Noting that there hadn't been a comprehensive coverage of this topic before Dr Stebbins and others tried to develop a fairly comprehensive exhibition. Great artists and a number of minor artists and folk artists are included
The fourteen chapters are

1. The Beginnings: Early Colonial Draftsmen
2. The Revolutionary Period. 1755--1780: Drawing Flourishes
3. Neoclassical Drawings: The Figure and the Land
4. Romanticism and the Early Nineteenth Century
5 Folk and Country Drawings
6. Drawings of the Hudson River School
7. The Victorian Watercolour, 1820--1880
8. Figure Drawings of the Nineteenth Century
9. The Impact of Impressionism
10. Illustration and Fantasy at the Turn of the Century
11. Twentieth Century Realism
12. Towards the Modern Era
13. Drawings of the War Years: Linear Emotion
14 Drawing Today: Many Directions
The book has a very full continuous text. There are 360 illustrations-- the vast majority are quarter to half an page and in B&W. There are some in colour
There is a good bibliography by 1977 standards
The comprehensive index quickly takes you to the artist you are interested in
There is also a list of illustrations that give brief details on the illustration

As a New Zealander I don't know much about this topic-- I use the book for reference or for looking though a section.

In evaluating this book you need to remember the aims of the Drawing Society.these are covered in several pages at the front of the book. Partly it was to show Americans there Drawings and Watercolor heritage and also to encourage some to take up a major interest in the study of these interesting objects
I think this a excellent book
I know of other books that survey American Drawings, but none are so comprehensive
Possibly someone who knows the field better could leave a comment mentioning the more up to date books
