Benjamin Robert Haydon dreamed of becoming the British Raphael and has ended up a footnote. The last few years of Haydon's life make for unhappy reading, but O'Keeffe deals with them well by combining sympathy with clear judgment. Several of his children died

Benjamin Robert Haydon dreamed of becoming the British Raphael and has ended up a footnote. He crossed paths and swords with Leigh Hunt, Hazlitt, and a host of early 19th-century painters and politicians. He was a friend of Wordsworth, and painted him, in what has become one of the classic images of the poet. Several of his children died. Debt collectors kept up a more or less constant barrage.

A Genius for Failure book. In A Genius for Failure Paul O'Keeffe makes clear that the real tragedy of Haydon lay in the extent to which his failures were unwittingly engineered by his own actions - his refusal to resort to the painting of fashionable portraits, for example, and his self-destructively acrimonious relationship with the RA.

With the story of Benjamin Robert Haydon, you are always compelled to begin at the end - with his rather gruesome suicide in the painting room of his London home on the morning of June 22, 1846. He had just suffered the most humiliating episode of his entire painting career

The painter Benjamin Robert Haydon was an exact contemporary of Wordsworth, Keats and Lamb, and some of the most vivid recollections of their lives and their conversations are found within the pages of Haydon's Autobiography. Destiny, however, can be cruel. That Haydon should be remembered for his writings would have been an anathema to him. He regarded himself, first and foremost, as a history painter, on the grandest of grand scales, in an age when history painting was beginning to lose its importance. He dreamt of heroic subjects, and great conceptions
