Man Ray also gathers together the photographer’s fashion stills, famous nudes, and landscapes in a powerful compendium that reminds us why his radical work was - and is - so important. The reproductions are beautiful, but most readers will find the catalog’s thumbnail chronology lacking: Who, for example, are the lesser-known people who appear throughout this book? Man Ray’s life so clearly informed his work that it seems vital to know more details.

Born in Brooklyn, Man Ray began his career as a commercial artist and photographer, and as a colleague of Marcel Duchamp and the New York Dadaists. He moved to Paris in 1921 and quickly became one of the most celebrated experimentalists of his time, joining Andre Breton, Max Ernst, Tristan Tzara, and Paul Eluard at the vanguard of Surrealism. Among his innovations was the technique of solarization, which bestowed a ghostly silver aura on his sitters.Included here are Man Ray's portraits of Breton, Yves Tanguy, Jean Cocteau, Lee Miller, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, and Gertrude Stein, now classic images that embody the idea of the creative persona. Here too are his endlessly inventive assembled objects and a selection of his striking fashion spreads for Vanity Fair, Vogue, and Harper's Bazaar, as well as his notorious photograph Le Violon d'Ingres, and Noire et Blanche, which in 1994 attracted the highest price ever paid to date for a photograph at auction.

Like other books in the "Aperture" series, the print quality is outstanding, with images of an adequate size given the reasonable price, and an introductory essay, in this case by Jed Perl, that describes the artist's life and work in the context of the period. Any deficiencies stem from the subject matter. Ray was more of a conceptual experimenter than an artist; few of the images reproduced here display any sort of emotional depth beyond a superficial beauty or studied detachment. I can't help but think what Robert Mapplethorpe would have done with Ray's "Woman with Mask and Handcuffs, 1929;" I'm sure Mapplethorpe would have done better with Ray's flower images as well. The "Rayographs" range from marginally interesting to stupefyingly dull, although Ray does get credit for coming up with the process.

In his essay, Perl opines that "Man Ray was a remarkably fortunate, happy man: he found himself at ease with the world through which he made his way." Maybe this was the problem - great art may require some degree of suffering on the part of the artist; maybe not as much as Van Gogh endured, but enough to inspire something beyond mere cleverness or decoration. Regardless, this Aperture volume is a good introduction to Ray's work for those unfamiliar with it.

Great large-scale images. I will be using this book to show my photography students. Nice book to have on the bookshelf too.

Good survey of Man Ray. I've got several books of his art and life and this one is above average due to its size and great price.

I agree with the previous reviewer that you shouldn't be fooled by others' glowing reviews. Text is sparse and 80% of it isn't in English. It ignores much of Ray's work and provides little insight.

Ray was a genius. His work preserves the beauty of his subjects for eternity. The book is well formatted and an excellent introduction.

Beautifull

Some photograhers see a pose and snap it as a statue. Man Ray envisoned etheral impressions through his works. I discovered this beautiful book of 300 duotone photos at a quaint little shoppe by the University. Don't you just love to happen upon old books unmasking new treasures? Me too. And I will definately be seeking out more regarding Man Ray's career as a commercial artist, photographer, and as a colleague of Marcel Duchamp and the New York Dadaists.
These poses, these works of art, through Ray's impeccably searching eyes, have a quality of hallowedness. An American, he had moved to Paris in 1921 and quickly became one of the most celebrated experimentalists of his era. Fascinatingly, he used a simple yet efective innovation of solaraization, which bestowed a ghostly silver aura upon his posers. Just truly remarkable!
Classic images of Salvador Dali, Breton, Yves Tanguy, Jean Cocteau, and even Gertrude Stein are among this embodiment. Also his creative assembled objects and a selection of fashion spreads for Vanity Fair, Vogue, and Harper's Bazaar.
A truly gorgeous photograpy book to be lost in.
