Quirky artist Donald Evans (1945-1977) "put his whole life and everything that interested him into the stamps of his fantasy world" (Willy Eisenhart). This book includes more than 80 color reproductions of his stamps, which are passionately collected throughout the world, plus his "Map of the World" and a typewritten "Census of the World". This artist was unknown to me and I find his art and his process absolutely fascinating. If you are unfamiliar with Donald Evans, he creates countries, in all their complexity, and then designs postage stamps for them. The work is intricate and beautiful. The book has excellent photography.

Donald Evans was an American artist (1945–1977), who was known for creating hand-painted postage stamps (artistamps) of fictional countries. Evans died in a fire in the Netherlands in 1977. While Evans initially painted postage stamps as a child, he returned to making them in 1971, shortly after graduating from Cornell University and training as an architectural designer with Richard Meier and Associates in New York City.

This artist was unknown to me and I find his art and his process absolutely fascinating. If you are unfamiliar with Donald Evans, he creates countries, in all their complexity, and then designs postage stamps for them. The work is intricate and beautiful. The book has excellent photography. My one complaint is that I would love to see some of the images enlarged.

Truly an artist worthy of study and enjoyment. He died too young and deserves a wider audience.

Artist Donald Evans painted nearly 4,000 stamps from 42 imaginary nations, bearing dates from 1852 to 1973 before his death at age 31 in a fire in Amsterdam. "The stamps are a kind of diary or journal," he said. "It's vicarious traveling for me to a made-up world that I like better than the one that I'm in."

Willy Eisenhart: "On little paper rectangles he painted precise transcriptions of his life. He commemorated everything that was special to him, disguised in a code of stamps from his own imaginary countries -- each detailed with its own history, geography, climate, currency and customs -- all of it representative of the real world but, like real stamps, apart from it in calm tranquility."

Evans painted in watercolor, always with the same brush, always the size of actual stamps, and handled the paper with stamp tongs. He sometimes applied a fanciful postmark carved from a rubber eraser.

His 330 page stamp album -- " Catalogue of the World" -- recorded the name of the fictional country, the fictional date, the subject and occasion of the stamp's issue, and the date on which he had completed the painting.

He told the "Paris Review", "The more I do, the more crazy and minuscule the detail becomes and the more stamp like they become. And that intrigues me. ... One of the things I get excited about in making this work is that I try to make it look real."

As a life long stamp collector, this wonderful collection of "Cinderella stamps" inspires, intrigues and pleases me greatly. If you feel the same way, you might enjoy the stamps on the letters and postcards in The Griffin & Sabine Trilogy Boxed Set: Griffin & Sabine/Sabine's Notebook/The Golden Mean.

The art world seems to cherish the large; large works, large personalities, large prices. That's why it's good to see the small celebrated, and in the work of Donald Evans, it is celebrated with such elan, that it's impossible to read this book without smiling and even laughing out loud.
Evans was an artist whose work is almost entirely made up of faux postage stamps (postoids, as they're known in mail art circles) celebrating not only fictional countries, but the small things of everyday life: fruit, chickens, garlic, plants and flowers. His postal ephemera is vivid and dryly funny, and conforms to an internal logic and order that is awesome. Leaf through the book and enjoy the stamps from Achterdijk celebrating windmills, or the block of four pesto stamps from Mangiare. During his short life his output was prodigious, his imagination remarkable.
If you like the work of Nick Bantock, Donald Evans will be just your style.

To be able to be so interested in such a singular imagery, that is to create a world within a world, is that which writer's do well.
And for the visual, image making artist to do so certainly does not surprise me either.
But, to come upon the adult artist still engaged in his childhood fantasy is totally deliightful.
To have the opportunity to see the many, many sets of postal stamp creations, the scenes, and the countries imagined in such a simple straight forward way, is to know that today's culture can still produce the artist whom does not need to impress by 'socking you in the face' for dramatic effect.
Whether you are an artist and or an art lover, I suggest that you spend a day or so with this delightful book. I think that you will come away better understanding the child in the adult artist better.
Too bad, too sad, for he & we, that he did not get to live out a long life ......... as who knows what his maturity might have produced?

How wonderful to discover this! Donald was actually my best friend as a young boy in New Jersey. He died far too soon.

Donald Evans made postage stamps of imaginary countries. His work is exquisitely detailed and full of charm and whimsy. The book contains many full page color illustrations of his work and detailed commentaries of each illustration, discussing any source materials used as well as how the stamps related to his life. Evans' stamps were inspired by his friendships and the places he visited and loved. Sadly he died at a young age, in a fire in Amsterdam.

The World of Donald Evans is truly magical! Loaded with interesting information and tons of inspiration!

The World of Donald Evans. Text by Willy Eisenhart. 1980.

When I look at the Donald Evans' stamps, I always remember at once many of the old French colonies' stamps. (and it's vice versa).
Truly, the old French colonies' stamps have had an irresistible attractiveness. Beauty and with some nostalgia, there are still.

Donald Evans was the man who recognized true Beauty of the Postage Stamps.

For me, Evans' art is so quiet and too lonely. I love quiet greatly, but I cannot stay longer into his world. I will be suffocated.
I love quiet very much as he did it into his many stamps.
---His art must be shining forever.
