This sheet music book includes the songs of the first solo album of the great former lead voice of 10,000 Maniacs, Natalie Merchant. It features all the songs of the original album, arranged for piano/voice: St. Andreas Fault, Wonder, Beloved Wife, River, Carnival, I may know the world, The letter, Cowboy Romance, Jealousy, Where I go, Seven Years. The songs are not very difficult to play, alone or in a band, but contains very peculiar harmonies and melodies, and sensitive lyrics that speak of everyday life's pains and joys.

Natalie Anne Merchant (born October 26, 1963) is an American alternative rock singer-songwriter. She joined the folk rock band 10,000 Maniacs in 1981, and was lead vocalist and primary lyricist for the group. She remained with the group for their first seven albums and left it to begin her solo career in 1993. She has since released seven studio albums. This book arrived quickly and in perfect condition; however, I was disappointed -- through no fault of the seller -- because I had hoped the book would be a collection of Natalie's lyrics (I think of her as one of the most underated American poets of the past 30 or so years) along with photos from throughout her career similar to one I had bought at a 10,000 Maniacs show in the early '90s. However, I'm just waiting for the right person who's learning to play piano or looking for new songs to play and it'll be placed in their hands ...

i bought this for my daughter she is learning guitar. This book is for an advanced level of music not for beginners. I knew that but wanted it for her later in her playing career.

Using this book, I was playing the intro to Verdi Cries in the basement, and my piano abilities are rough at best. My wife was upstairs and heard me playing. She told me later that she thought it was amazing how well I was able to figure out how to play so well from just hearing the song. Later, she was in the basement and noticed the book that she didn't realize I had purchased and discovered that I had some help figuring it all out. Great book. It seems to stay true to the music you are used to hearing on the albums.

Natalie creates such socially and emotionally spirited lyrics and music, it has always been difficult to capture her meanings without falling prey to the 'happy little ditty' feeling you might get when you hear some of her music in passing... but LISTEN; it can make you cry, overwhelmed, compassionate, connected, fulfilled... by what stirs her- compels her- to create the gifted, complex mixture of her observation, experience and 'want' for this world and beyond. What has she seen that most of us have missed and simply cannot articulate?
I wish there were a complete collection of her works, including all of 10,000 Maniacs, but this will have to suffice, and it is a *great* collection at that. I hope the next Collection includes "I May Know the Word". I can only imagine where her inspirations are drawn from- what makes her *see* what she sees to deliver eloquence in simple language that can stop you in your tracks. If you can play *any* instrument, are inclined in *any* way to follow Natalie, this book is a MUST. A peek into the very private and protected world of THE Natalie Merchant.
