The accuracy of this book has been debated but its very entertaining. If your one of these nutters that want to turn Elvis into some sort of holy figure then you will hate this book.

Goldman's 1981 biography Elvis was much more controversial. Respect to Albert, this guy liked to live dangerously. Or maybe he had a death wish.

What an interesting book!. Albert Goldman is two hands above the best author among a slew of Elvis biographies and autobiographies that I've recently read by his friends, musicians, housekeepers, lovers, and Memphis Mafia

What an interesting book!. Albert Goldman is two hands above the best author among a slew of Elvis biographies and autobiographies that I've recently read by his friends, musicians, housekeepers, lovers, and Memphis Mafia. I'm boning up for a book of my own on Elvis and the Memphis Racquetball Mafia. It also entailed interviewing a dozen other pros who played racquetball with Elvis at Graceland including Dr. Nichopoulos and two of E's personal aides whom I know from my own sport days.

Much-hated Elvis author Albert Goldman gets his butt kicked on live TV. Goldman's 1981 biography "Elvis" is one. Goldman did a similar hatchet job on John Lennon, but it is for his biography on Elvis that he will always be remembered.

Dust jacket notes: "Albert Goldman has written the definitive biography of Elvis Presley - a biography of a star and a symbol, an American dream and an adolescent illusion, the story of an era of energy and excess. Goldman portrays Presley as the archetypal superstar, a catalyst of American popular culture - glorified, condemned, and mythicized during his reign as King of the Age of Rock. After three years of research and over 600 interviews, the truth about the pop culture phenomenon of the century is told here for the first time in a book that combines astonishing disclosures with brilliant cultural commentary. Albert Goldman dramatizes with a novelist's skill the rise and fall of Elvis Presley. He illuminates the man and the myth against a backdrop of Memphis and Vegas, down-home religion and pink Cadillacs, white gospel and rhythm and blues and the music that rocked. Here is the life and times - the schemes and scams, the money and power plays, the decadence and dissolution and the panoply of life as showbiz. Albert Goldman's work has made obsolete the trendy books spawned by Presley's death. His is a monumental achievement, the most electric and explosive work ever published on the culture shock called Elvis."

Though the author clearly wants the readers to see the bad side of Elvis, much of what the author shares has later been retold with sometimes less harshness by the very people that he interviewed for this book. He apparently has a deep seated dislike for Elvis and a desire to want people to view Elvis as a worthless human being with no good human qualities or positive characteristics. This is clear when he repeatedly states that Elvis has no talent in anyway shape or form. I think anyone who took the time to Listen to Elvis recordings in 1960 alone would find that Elvis could use his voice as a beautiful instrument regardless of whether you likes his music or not. I know it has been said that others have come forward to write their own books to set the record straight because of Goldmans "negative book". Priscilla being one of them. Her book Elvis and Me shed a much more negative light on Elvis thant this book. I like the music of Elvis and some of his movies I think this book gives a good insight into one part of the image and the man. I would recomend it.

Why the three Stars? No one touches Goldman's flourish, however his offbeat personal observations that account for 25% of the book are malarkey. Well written garbage. I LOVE ELVIS and I have to read all of the books on him. This is the book that accused Elvis of having sex with minor girls so Priscilla wrote her version so the truth could come out. Let's admit it all of them sugar coat their books to make the King look better than he was in the drug, sex, and anger area, BUT Elvis was a great singer and a good person. He did cheat on all of his women from day one up until the end. He also showered them with admiration and gifts; unlike any of my boy friends or husbands. Yes, some women used him for his money and they paid dearly for it with his cheating and lies. Any one who loved Elvis paid for it. I am not sure if I believe Priscilla stayed untouched in the sex area all of those months while playing with Elvis but I really don't care either way. Yes, it is weird if he did not have sex but it was only because it was against the law and other singers went down for that reason. I am glad Priscilla got Elvis no matter how she did it. I liked Anita, Linda, and Ginger; they were all good women who Elvis made to pay for loving them. Everyone in the 70s painted Elvis black; now they seem to sugar coat it all, but he was a good man who did abundantly give. It's refreshing to see what a person would write that is not sugar coating it all. The truth has never fully been told except in the Elvis what happened book came close. I love Elvis so I don't care what he did and we are all bad at times. He did apologize for most of what he did which is lacking in most of society. I will always be a fan and I know he had more rages than Priscilla spoke of, that Ginger and Anita gave good versions they probably did not see as much as Linda and Priscilla did. The true version of Linda's story is the Elvis and the Beauty queen movie and her sugar coated version is her book. I enjoyed reading what a person could dig up on Elvis with out a person sugar coating it. I am an adult so I can form my own opinion based on all of the data; and I love Elvis but he had major problems and treated those closest to him really bad. He was very controlling and a great person. I have all of the books on him and I have this book as well. I want to read what people can find out and what they will tell. All fans always think any time something is not sugar coated that it is lies with hate, but they cover up how Elvis was and place him on a petal stool. Elvis grew up mastering every area in his life being able to achieve all that he desired so he changed and was controlling and demanding. He was starved for God and Jesus and now he can rest in Peace with them making music in Heaven forever and writing his own material. He truly was a great entertainer and the truth has never fully came out. But real fans like me would love him anyways.

This is a re- read for me. I read it when first published. Too much flowery language and personal opinion/bias but good juicy way- too -personal details. (Diapers).
