FRANÇOIS-Joseph Fétis, the author of Anthony Stradivari, the Celebrated Violin Maker, was born in Liège, Belgium in 1784 and died in Brussels in 1871. He began his musical education with his father, Antoine, who was a church organist, violinist, and conductor, and from him François-Joseph learned to play the organ, piano, and violin.

François-Joseph Fétis was a Belgian musicologist, composer, critic, and teacher. He is the founder of Violin Advisor, LLC, a consulting firm that advises purchasers of fine violins. One of the 19th century's most influential critics, he compiled the Biographie universelle des musiciens et bibliographie générale de la musique, an enduring resource. Stewart Pollens is a maker of violins and keyboard instruments who served as the Conservator of Musical Instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1976 to 2006.

François-Joseph Fétis (French: ; 25 March 1784 – 26 March 1871) was a Belgian musicologist, composer, teacher, and one of the most influential music critics of the 19th century. His enormous compilation of biographical data in the Biographie universelle des musiciens remains an important source of information today. Fétis was born in Mons, Hainaut, eldest son of Antoine-Joseph Fetis and Elisabeth Desprets, daughter of a famous chirurgical doctor. He had 9 brothers and sisters
