Walter Maynard Ferguson CM (May 4, 1928 – August 23, 2006) was a Canadian jazz trumpeter and bandleader. He came to prominence in Stan Kenton's orchestra before forming his own big band in 1957. He was noted for his bands, which often served as stepping stones for up-and-coming talent, his versatility on several instruments, and his ability to play in a high register.

Someone should write a book about Maynard Ferguson.

Someone should write a book about Maynard Ferguson. For more than 50 years he stretched the range of the trumpet upwards beyond our wildest dreams, relished every note that he played, brought on a multitude of young musicians within his bands and wrapped every audience before whom he appeared in the wild elixir of his music. In front of the musical juggernaut that he was it mattered little that his relentlessly bravura playing wasn't consistently tasteful

MAYNARD! Bandleader and jazz trumpet phenom Maynard Ferguson as remembered by 30 musicians and others from his earliest US. gigs to the peak of his career on Columbia Records.

Maynard Ferguson began his U.S. musical career with Jimmy Dorsey and Charlie Barnet orchestras in 1949. From then he went on to be a featured soloist with Stan Kenton from 1950 right up thru the mid fifties. During that time he also recorded many studio dates with such leaders as Shorty Rogers,Russ Garcia,Pete Rugolo,Johnny Richards,Buddy Bregman,Jerry Fielding,Milt Bernhardt,Louie Bellson,Georgie Auld.According to Lord's discography he participated in 328 albums during his entire career.

In the summer of 1957 he put together what was, in my opinion, the nucleus of his best band that would excite, thrill and inspire audiences in person, on the radio and thru records until about March 1960 at which time Jimmy Ford left. Many considered Jimmy, a Birdlike altoist, who had previously played with Fats Navarro,Allen Eager,Bud Powell,Tadd Dameron at the Royal Roost and recorded with Red Rodney, to be the true heart and soul of that group. That 13 piece group included over those years such players as Bob Burgess,Jimmy Cleveland,Slide Hampton,Charles Greenlee,Don Sebesky,Mike Zwerin(trombone)Jimmy Ford, Tony Ortega,Willie Maiden,Carmen Leggio, Joe Farrell, Lin Halliday,Wayne Shorter,Jay Cameron,Frank Hittner,Tate Houston(saxes)Bill Chase,Don Ellis,Jerry Tyree,Chet Ferretti Rick Kiefer,Joe Burnett,John Bello,Tom Slaney(trumpet)Joe Zawinul,Jaki Byard,Bobby Timmons(piano).

The author has interviewed 30 former associates collegues of M.F. Unfortunately, from my perspective, the emphasis was later in the bands history. Specifically, the interviews were conducted in the late 70's. So the thoughts and impressions of many of the key nucleus players mentioned above were not recorded. Though I did enjoy the words of vocalist Irene Kral who was part of that group for a time. As well as those made by drummer Rufus Jones. But, I think the overall book suffers by pretty much by not covering more of the key formative years.

Many of those interviewed grew up admiring Maynard when they were students and were quite excited to be able to play with him. They seemed pretty much to admire him as a person, think he was a good leader and trumpet master. Also, as might be expected, they tended to pretty much approve of the music the band played when they were members. Again, my personal musical taste does not really like these later examples of the band.Which moved away from straight ahead swinging jazz to a more commercial style. Nevertheless, this is still a good quick worthwhile read that adds to the understanding of a major artist.

"Maynard" , Ralph Jungheim's fascinating assemblage of first person accounts is a must read for all trumpeters and jazz enthusiasts. I like the format....short dialogues by fellow musicians. There's an old saying "you don't really know someone until you go on the road with them" and this book is a collection of people who knew. Parts of it reminded me of the Nat's (Hentoff & Shapiro) anthology of jazz "Hear Me Talking to You". Instead of reading a reviewer's account of what happened, you hear from the people who were there and made it happen. Each installment is fairly short....perfect for all of us with short attention spans. Get it!

Interesting take on MF from musicians he worked with.

Wonderful book...all the musicins that Maynard played with had a lot of great things to say (except Lew). Would definitely recommend this to Maynard fans!

Maynard the book
Excellent snapshot of a superb musician by his peers. Tactfully edited.Good glimpse of the life of a musician on the road.

If you care about editing this is not the book for you. Even the table of contents is wrong. Throughout the book the interviewees refer to being ON the band instead of IN the band. This is constant with EVERY interview. Who talks like that? This is an editing mystery. Also there are interviews where broken English is not corrected. It is very stupidly constructed and many of the interviews go off on tangents and never return to Maynard. This book would rate a D- in any high school composition class. A sloppy grab for money and a disgrace to Maynard's memory.

Any lover of Big Band Jazz & the Trumpet is familiar with Maynard Ferguson's contribution to these art forms . Most of us , however , have no idea of how long & how interesting his career was . He became a professional trumpet player in his native Canada as a teenager in the 1940s & performed almost to the day he died (August 23,2006).Unlike anything else available in print about Maynard, veteran Jazz producer & chronicler , Ralph Jungheim , through a series of interviews with Maynard's peers & sidemen , conducted in 1978, at the height of his career, brings the reader directly into Maynard's very persona. His life & career, from being featured in the 1948 Jimmy Dorsey Band, to a bizarre fascination with Timothy Leary's LSD cult at the infamous Hitchcock estate in Millbrook NY, to fronting the most exciting Jazz Big Band from the late1950s into the late 1970s, to becoming a disciple of the Indian Guru ,Sai Baba, while at the same time ,being THE high-note Trumpet King of all time,is vividly fleshed out in the words of people that were there . This is a must read for anyone interested in : (1) Maynard Ferguson (2) The Trumpet (3) Big Band Jazz & (4) a running history of alternative life styles during the Cold War & Vietnam era.
