The other good thing about this book is that it shows what complete sharks people in the music industry tend to be and that there is an ongoing issue of black people being exploited to make money for white people. Anyway it's a fascinating book and one which I really recommend, especially if you don't have much knowledge of modern Black American culture, at least in the big cities. It's easy to read whilst being thouroughly eloquent and could probably even have been a bit longer.

William Shaw is the author of several non-fiction books including Westsiders: Stories of the Boys in the Hood, about a year spent with the young men of South Central Los Angeles, and A Superhero For Hire, a compilation of columns in the Observer Magazine. A Song from Dead Lips - published in the US as She's Leaving Home – is his first fiction book.

As a very average European with a wide musical taste, hip-hop was a genre that I appreciated but never really understood. Especially, the violent under-current in some of the songs. I ventured to understand it more and bought this book as an introduction. It sets the scene as a group of guys on the edge of the LA music industry are trying to crack the big-time. Some are good and have a degree of success whilst others just won't make it or have fallen off the crest of a wave. I came away from reading this book with a different perspective on this music scene than I entered with and can claim to have some knowledge of it's origin and what makes it tick. I found reading the book rather patchy and really had to force myself through it. I can't really put this down to the writing, as in general, it is well-written so it must be my lack of understanding on the subject matter. I was getting lost between the characters and as a result did not enjoy the read. Not a great read, but nonetheless an informative one.

This is up there with the best Hip Hop books. A gripping true life account of various struggling musicians on the fringes of the LA Hip Hop scene, some you will have heard of, others remain obscure. It shows their struggles and daily hustles. Insightful, well written and hard to put down. Buy this if you have any interest in Hip Hop and also buy Douglas Century's "Street Kingdom" for a similar excellent book on similar themes in New York.
