This is an impressive book as an introduction to stride piano. It reveals some of the patterns of play that you might not be able to figure out by just listening. So THAT'S how you make that sound!! The included disk is very important, because it shows that it is possible to play these transcriptions.

Doomblade

This book delivers what it promises on the cover: "Great intermediate-level arrangements," and "Authentic stride-style sounds." These truly sound great and will introduce you to the left-hand jumps of this style, i.e., the "stride." In the context of general piano repertoire, these arrangements probably fall in the upper intermediate to lower advanced level. But they are "intermediate" compared to note-for-note transcriptions of stride pieces from historic recordings (some of which can be extremely difficult). The accompanying CD is fun to listen to on its own, and includes versions of each piece in both a slow, practice tempo, as well as a fast, performance tempo. (And some pieces sound good even at slow tempo.) My favorites arrangements in this collection are "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Old Fashioned Love," which both make great use of walking tenths. Also, once the chord progression in the left hand on a piece is mastered, it's possible to start improvising riffs and phrases in the right hand to give these pieces a personal touch, as did the masters (Fats Waller, James Johnson, Willie "the Lion" Smith, and others) back in the day. Take time to learn a couple of these pieces - you won't be disappointed. Thanks Judy!

Judy is so good I can't keep up with her old time piano instruction. I am keeping it for when I get better. Well, back to my John Thompson books; I wish there were more books like the John Thompson learning series; that take you through every level.

Disappointing. The book consists of a few introductory exercises, and then several arrangements by Ms. Carmichael using stride. But there was no discussion of developing stride technique. For example, is it best to read the notes or look at the keys, or somehow do both? The arrangements are well done, but it would have been better if these were graded in difficulty with instructions as to what one is supposed to learn from that particular arrangement. At the end of the day, it is not much better than picking up stride and ragtime pieces from other composers and just practicing them.
