Darksiders 2 is way better than 1. Not so with the art books. Here's why:
This thing is longer by over 70 pages. Most of the art isn't tiny and the Environments (places) section isn't as scant. I really like this book. Also, a lot more full color Joe Mad pieces are in this one. It had characters, enemies, weapons, objects and areas. Also, it has quite a bit more commentary (the second book has next to none). Although that commentary is hyper cheesy fantasy descriptions of the various subjects in this book.
Although War is the focus, this one has art of all 4 horseman. The boss pictures are bigger and better and all but one are drawn. Plus, it has Samael who is missing from the second book. The Griever has no concept art but he is in the back. Which is another great part of this book.
In the end there are the full color CGI models from the game. What a nice touch. The second book has that but they are tiny and not colored.
If you are into Joe Mad's art (the other artists mimic his style phenomenally well), comic style fantasy art with Gothic undertones or the Darksiders games: get this.
I have the second printing and the binding isn't woefully flimsy like in the first, but it's still pretty bad. You have to be careful when flipping through it. A real drag some of these older Udon softcovers are afflicted by this because they are excellent books otherwise.

(this review should realistically be 4.5 stars, but i'm lacking that option here)

let me say this: i love this book. i've had an interest in the darksiders series since i heard about it back in 08, and though i haven't had the time to buy and play the games, i've had an awesome time looking at the art.

Mr. Madureira's art is spectacular and every piece has a satisfying feel to it, bolstering the "chunky" feel i love to have in art. literally every single picture you see in this could be used on a Heavy metal album cover, which is a damn good source of inspiration for fellow artists like myself. the only downside i see is that the binding is a bit sub-par (as many have mentioned in their reviews). while this is a problem, it's not that big of one. other Udon art books i own (such as the Okami official complete works, also a good purchase) also have this flaw. but considering the quality and sheer quantity of work put into the book, it's not really a big deal. just be careful with it and enjoy.

all in all, i'm quite satisfied with my purchase and i look forward to getting the Art of Darksiders II in the near future.

I've had the book for a couple days now, and have been going through it extensively. I've even opened it up enough to have the pages lay flat. No binding issues, for me anyways, made some sounds, but no falling out pages, etc. Parka mentioned newer editions of this book have better binding, and I guess this is the case since I have no issues. This book feels like the new one (The Art of Darksiders 2), just more pages, not as much art, but yeah, definitely worth picking up, and I'm happy it's being republished, like all art books a premium gets made when things go out of print. Ditch the old reviews, and pick it up while you can :) And if the things falls apart in a couple of months, I'll let you know, but I doubt that'll happen. cheers

UPDATE: just a heads up, yeah the binding is bad. Same goes for the newer Darksiders 2 book, both are of the same build. Pages are still together, just the glue is unstuck on the top and bottom third of the book, so only the glue in the center of the binding, and threading is keeping the pages together. I hope that makes sense. If you can afford the hardbacks, I'd go with those. Though they're a little overpriced, seeing that a lot of the darkhorse published hardcover art books cost half as much. Still won't knock it off the 5 star chart, since the art is amazing, and a must have for anyone remotely interested in this genre of art. cheers!

Just got this today, Sunday, via amazon... I know right, Sunday?

I'm someone that really digs art books, and it's been a while since I've been this excited about a new one... probably Flamboyant or Intron Depot 3 Ballistics would be the last time I was this floored. When I flipped through the book my jaw really did drop. It's thick full of artwork, turnarounds, concept art, backgrounds, sketches (hundreds of little sketches) pretty much everything you could imagine from the game.

I'm not a gamer (even tho I'm studying game design), but this book makes me want to run out and get the game, it's so vast. If your expecting screen caps from the game, it doesn't appear to have many if any. It really has a considerable amount of Joe Mad's drawn art.

Highly recommended for fans of Joe Mad or fans of the Darksiders video game.

Уou ll never walk alone
This book is certainly one of the best concept art books I've ever bought. I was flabbergasted at how thick the book was as well as how dense with content. I've spent more on much less before on these types of books. Not only does it contain concept art and renders of characters, places, etc., but it also shows concepts on something that I haven't seen any other book do: typography and logo. It actually features the Darksiders title and logo concepts as well as everything else, along with other symbols and insignias. The book also has gorgeous finished works in the back. Definitely worth the price and a must-have for aspiring designers and artists. It's an extremely valuable reference for successful visual development in video games.

*EDIT*

After owning this book for a short while, the pages are already starting to come out. It seems the gluing job was not done that well. I haven't even flipped through it too much and this is already happening. I would have thought the binding would have been better for such a heavy book.
