According to her book entitled Echo Nouveau, The Art and Life of a Working Girl: 1995-2010 Echo claims she has become primarily digital over the years. Working from references of photographs taken of models, echo first creates a hand drawn sketch of her designs. Those designs are then transferred to her computer via a scanner to be completed digitally. Echo generally starts painting her work in Adobe Photoshop and then moves to Adobe Illustrator to work on the vector based aspects of her design.

I have been a long time fan of Ms. Chernik's detailed Art Nouveau style work. When I heard she was releasing an autobiographical book, I had to have a copy.

Much of the work included is already available to be viewed on her website or her social networking sites, but what really makes me drool is the detail in the work I can observe on the printed page that just is lost when viewing a low resolution web image. The book is a tall 12" x 8". The single-page, full-color plates are large enough to be able to see tiny details in the art, something that is often lost when the images are smaller.

That alone would have made the book worth the purchase for me. But there's more.

Also included are tips on working in the industry, breaking in to licensing, dealing with different types of clients and Echo's sketches, photo reference and insider looks into her working process and career development.

The final page is a FAQ that sums up questions readers might have not covered in other portions of the book.

A great coffee table book for Art Nouveau aficionados and a great reference book for artists looking for some insight into how successful contemporary artist's career has progressed.

Note: I purchased this book for my personal library. I have known Echo on-line for over a decade.

What I consider a great "Art of Book" is not only displaying your best work but to give advice about the business and the process of creating such art. When an artist gives back to the community and not just produce an ego driven book makes it a great art book. My library is filled with those style books. Artist including Drew Struzan, Joe Jusko, Julie Bell and Boris Vallejo to name a few produce those style books. And now my collection includes Echo. This book is wonderful and I am not only learning a couple of her techniques but also about the business. This is a top notch book and must be for all art enthusiast.

I really like how this book is more than just Echo's history with pictures of her work over the past years. It has lots of great industry information. Of course her art and work is amazing and that is great as well. Excellent book. The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is because when it arrived it had a little damage on the books corners not enough to log a formal complaint for a new book. It is mail order but in the future it would be good if they added some bubble rap or cardboard to protect the corners. Great book regardless.

In todays market there are any number of books that offer you a series of glossy pages filled with artwork or drawings from movies or games. (Video and RPG.) This work, by a published and successful artist at the top of her game, goes a step beyond that.

In this new book, her first published collection, Echo Chernik offers advice to those seeking a career in art. With over a decade of striking artwork in her portfolio and the scrapes and bruises that came with it her advice, often poignant, is hard learned and well heeded. This isn't a "warts and all" book filled with needless introspection and isn't an exercise in back patting. Like many artists Echo paid her dues and that long slog, sometimes frustrating, is shared here along with some spot on survival tips. That's unique in this category of artists collections and should not be dismissed lightly.

I suggest this book for a wide audience: for those fascinated by her art, those interested in her success story and for anyone who wants to break out of the pack of other artists and distinguish themselves. Highly recommended.

Wow! - That might be sufficient for this review, however, as Amazon allows only five stars on their rating scale I feel compelled to continue. This book is Awesome. Designed, for the most part, as a primer for the aspiring or novice commercial artist/illustrator it's an invaluable guide. For those of us incapable of constructing stick figures, yet still capable of recognizing true genius, its well worth the price of admission. The advertising and fine art examples (frankly, I can't tell where one begins and the other ends) selected for this, her first book, are simply stunning. This lady is the real deal. Her resume is stuffed with so many accolades she probably issues supplements. I think what impresses me the most about Mrs. Chernik's contributions to her chosen craft is her making great art accessible to the masses. No longer must we travel to The Tate, The National Gallery or pray-tell, The Louvre, in order to view masterworks, no, now they are as close as our neighborhood supermarket. Please, by all means, don't overlook the tea aisle. Lest I be accused of resorting to hyperbole in singing the praises of this gifted, young artist, I would just suggest a visit to her website gallery. Be forewarned, however, you most assuredly will leave with much more than just a book. Yes, I highly recommend ordering this book - and soon. Once this book goes out of print that 40 bucks will hardly cover the down payment on any available after-market copies. Incidentally, Echo, that 14k signature against the charcoal endpaper - very, very classy!
