I've wanted to be an artist for as long as I can remember. Or at least since junior high school, when that kid in my homeroom got to second base with Shelley Cummings by painting her portrait on his Trapper Keeper.

But I never learned how to 'art'. So now I'm trying to learn on my own. And to remember where I put my old Trapper Keeper. Because you're never too old for second base.

I figured I'd start with the basics, and finger painting is about as basic as you can get. After all, who can't fingerpaint? Edward Scissorhands? Captain Hook? Gumby?

I was hoping for a step-by-step guide on using my digits to create masterpieces of modern art. Instead, I got a book that a four-year-old might love, but is useless for a serious artiste in training. You think young Picasso read Barney the Dinosaur books in his studio? No sir, he did NOT.

Also, it turns out I'm really bad at this. I ate more paint than I got on the paper. I think I broke a pinky. And I ruined an entire room's worth of carpet -- it looks like somebody slaughtered a family of rainbows in my living room. Now the book mocks me from the shelf. Can I fingerpaint? YES I CAN'T!

Kids really enjoy this book because they enjoy finger painting a lot. It's a chance to let them be messy and have fun and create pretty paintings. The ideas are easy yet good and entertaining.
