New York: Applause Theatre Books. After reading the script for Fortune and Men's Eyes by former prisoner and playwright John Herbert, he was instrumental in producing the play for an off-Broadway production. Later, he was a civilian observer during the Attica Prison riot, which left a deep impression on him and spurred his lifelong activism for prisoner's rights. David Rothenberg's Memoir of Broadway Glamour, Social Justice, and Political Passion.

Fortune in My Eyes is a fascinating chronicle of how one man, over six . I'm not sure David Rothenberg is capable of retiring. He's still involved with helping people, especially young people from Fortune.

Fortune in My Eyes is a fascinating chronicle of how one man, over six decades, moved easily between the glamorous world of theatre and the gritty world of the disenfranchised (gays, prisoners, ex-cons, AIDS patients). And if it seems at times as if he's lived a Forrest Gump-like life, well, that's not a criticism. It was producing John Herbert's Fortune and Men's Eyes off-Broadway that changed Rothenberg's life forever. The response to the play - not an overwhelming critical success - was staggering. He's still making a difference.

A memoir of the social justice advocate and Broadway producer discusses his life's work of helping imprisoned men and women change their lives. Applause Theatre & Cinema Book Publishers.

(Applause Books). David Rothenberg's multilayered life thrust him into Broadway's brightest lights, prison riots, political campaigns, civil rights sit-ins, and a Central American civil war. In his memoir, Fortune in My Eyes , his journey includes many of the most celebrated names in the theater: Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis, Sir John Gielgud, Charles Boyer, Peggy Lee, Eartha Kitt, Charles Laughton, Alvin Ailey, and numerous others. David produced an Off-Broadway prison drama, Fortune and Men's Eyes , which reshaped his life. John Herbert's chilling play led directly to the creation of the Fortune Society, which has evolved into one of the nation's most formidable advocacy and service organizations in criminal justice. David was Elizabeth Taylor's opening night date at the Richard Burton Hamlet a distant cry from his entering Attica prison during that institution's famed inmate uprising...just two of the experiences revealed in this memoir. As a theater publicist and producer and as a social activist he shares experiences with presidents (JFK and Bill Clinton) and with anonymous men and women, out of prison, who have fought to reclaim their lives. The human drama of the formerly incarcerated is a match for many of the entertainment world's most fabled characters.

The author would have no reason to remember me. I was a theater/nightclub publicist in NYC in the early 1980s and met him several times. He had been out of the biz for a number of years at the time (and was soon to return to the business we call "show"). But I really had no concept of what he had been doing in the interim and the experiences he had. I bought this book for my Kindle at a friend's recommendation. I looked forward to being dazzled by the "Broadway Glamour" the title promised. The book delivered on that. But I was far more taken with the "Social Justice...". The stories are powerful, moving, often painful, more often inspiring. I wish that when I met David 30-some years ago I had known what his eyes had seen and ears had heard. I would have quizzed him. This book provided the answers to the questions I did not know I had. Thanks, David.

The author, David Rothenberg, would have no reason to remember me, as I am a former volunteer instructor at the Fortune Society, but when I heard he had written a book about his life, I wanted to read what he was all about. This book looks at many different aspects of Mr. Rothenberg's life. His life working as a press agent in the theater is a real joy to read, and he has so many great tales to tell.

Where the book is strongest though is when David discusses the criminal justice system and his coming out as a Gay man. His views of how the world views things, and how the world can be is a very powerful statement. His life of working with the formerly incarcerated is quite powerful, and more of these stories need to be covered in the news media, and newspapers, and not buried in the back pages either. David Rothenberg is a witness to how lives have been changed by the Fortune Society, an organization he founded.

After reading this book you walk away with a feeling of hope and joy knowing that people like David Rothenberg have made the world a better place to live in for so many people. Kind of makes you wish there were more Davids in this world. I am glad to have met David in my life, and even happier now that I know that much more about him.

A meaningful account of the injustices of the DOJ told by a man who became an advocate and activist for those newly released from prison. Mr. Rothenberg is a unique man who "put his money where his mouth was" and admirably did so much.

The book arrived promptly. It was well packaged.
I enjoyed reading about this period of New York City history.
I remember that David Rothenberg produced the play Fortune and Men's Eyes and later was the founder of the Fortune Society which has grown into a substantial charitable organization that still delivers services to former prisoners.

Braswyn
Fabulous account of Mr. Rothenberg's quest to help newly released prisoners deal with/cope in the "outside" world, along with some tantalizing accounts of his dealings with Broadway stars and producers.

Good book

This book is essentially David Rothenberg's autobiography and he has had a facinating life. I had never heard of him but I bought this book after hearing him on the radio discuss his creation of the Fortune Society. Overall it is a worthwhile book; fairly well written, reasonably objective and a good resource. The first half descibing the failures of our prison system and David Rothenberg's success in making a difference is hard to put down but I crashed somewhere in the middle and struggled to finish. The abrupt transition to coming out and advocating the gay lifestyle was too difficult to absorb considering that the first part of the book was so compelling and seemed to be heading for a conclusion. The gay "portion" of the book requires the reader to rip themself away from the prison discussion and go back in time 40 years and tackle a second difficult subject. For alot of us, gay life is difficult to understand (though finding it difficult is not the same as being homophobic). My humble opinion is it would be more effective to address these two major subjects in two separate books. Other than that, it is clear that David Rothenberg has made a significant and positive impact in our world.

Excellent story.
