This guide for actors and directors develops a valid method for training performers to act from their core-whether they are cold reading. It distills Meisner's theory and refines it, much as Lee Strasberg served to adapt Stanislavski's method decades ago. I saw a video interview with Jack Nicholson who claimed that Comey had revolutionized his acting. That is high praise indeed for this magnificent teacher.

Jeremiah Comey's film acting method makes an incredible book for actors & instructors. It distills Meisner's theory and refines it, much as Lee Strasberg served to adapt Stanislavski's method decades ago. I saw a video interview with Jack Nicholson who claimed that Comey had revolutionized his acting. That is high praise indeed for this magnificent teacher. Comey starts with the basic exercise of emotional copying, discusses how focus of concentration on the other actor is the key to creativity and then enlarges the concept to an acceptance of circumstance. Major emphasis is put on the skill of sight reading and getting off the page. Comey further defines the art of concentration, the art of not knowing, the art of acceptance and the art of giving and receiving. For actors stuck in their heads, Comey unlocks the key to real choices that may or may not be married to the obvious emotions of the text, which creates subtext, the medium in which film is told. Comey then gives a great detailed discussion of how his approach differs from audition technique & how the technique can enhance good auditions. Comey uses many examples from well-known films and some of the best actors and top stars. In the Acting for the Camera course I teach in North Carolina, I started with three books including Benedetti & Tony Barr, but found that while other books add helpful points, Comey's approach is the meat and potatoes, forever contradicting thespians who relegate film acting to theatre-lite. While not all of my young acting students have been able to get out of their heads, some have shown amazing progress in a 16-week semester, proof of the great effectiveness of this technique. Comey's book will augment Meisner-based approaches and is amazingly clear and to the point. Wow! Bravo! Thank you!

Jeremiah Comey's book is revolutionary. No longer am I in my head plotting and planning how I am going to say my lines. Now I actually listen and am able to react truthfully, organically and to be quite honest it feels real good! Jeremiah's book set me free! Now my acting is real from the heart and not the head. I am not acting I am reacting. His book is so easy to read and it makes total sense. I love that he uses examples from his students in class to give the reader an insight of what typical acting mistakes we make..thinking that they are BRILLIANT choices! This is what Casting Directors and film Directors want in a performance...straight organic re-actions...and Jeremiah's book helps you go through the exercises and explains just that. I read somewhere else about the 5 arts of acting but the way Jeremaiah explains it is very easy to grasp and apply to ones performance. I also like that he refers to many films and comments on how the actors performance earns their Oscar! I highly recommend this book!

Jeremiah is an amazing amazing, extreme attentive and insightful tutor. I got the chance to work with him earlier this year and to have all his ideas and the different scenarios outlined so clearly, simply and directly in this book is wonderful and would be kept in my actor's toolbox forever and ever. Recommended for any screen actor- whether you think you need some work on it or you are already brilliant at it- this book helped me totally understand the art of brilliant acting on screen and what makes a performance on screen work and is effective. Many examples and scenes from movies included as well.
A greatly written and insightful book to read. Not only did I never get bored of reading it, it was thoroughly entertaining and a fun book to read as well.
It was very motivating and inspiring in some parts and really encouraged me to achieve greatly in my own work as well.
Thanks Jeremiah! Love ya!!

I read this book a few years ago and then had the luxury to take one of his classes recently. What it impacted me most about the book is how well it is written. It is very easy to read, the author takes you into a remarkable acting class in which two actors must perform a scene in front of a recording camera, and the 3 to 4 page scene had only been read once. Very challenging indeed, but very effective. The actor then gets to see himself and listen to what the teacher had to said regarding his/her performance. It is a always a great teaching method to listen to oneself after the act. The actor can see where the strengths and weaknesses are. Besides the book, Jeremiah does all this in a real class, and the book reflects just that, along with valuable information for actors and directors.

Best thing you can do after reading this book is to head over Jeremiah Comey's Screen Actors Studio in Studio City, CA and take a class yourself! More info at jeremiahcomey.com

Michael Caine - Acting in Film: An Actor's Take on Movie Making (The Applause Acting Series) Revised Expanded EditionIf you want to be a great film actor this is the book that tells you how. The book simplifies acting for film, based on the authors thirty years of teaching experiences. A great read,
Apparently Jeremiah has taught actors like Billy Zane, Jackson Rathbone, Johnny Knockvill, Mahcad Brooks, Armie Hammer, William Levy, that's why I checked out.

I got this book for my daughter, a film student, while she was participating in a workshop with the author Jeremiah Comey. It was an enriching & memorable experience for her, and she says that much has been gained from the workshop and the invaluable content of this book, especially now that she has a copy personally signed by Jeremiah. Yay!
