Galbraith began collaboration with Westminster Detective Edna Hendershot, who had investigated two cases in which women aged 59 and 65 were raped in similar ways. They also discovered a burglary in which a masked man had attempted to tie up a 46-year-old woman. The woman managed to jump out of her window, breaking three ribs and puncturing a lung. The four known cases took place in different suburbs of Denver.

Wynn Bullock was one of the main figures in the American modernist tradition alongside colleagues and friends Edward Weston, Harry Callahan, and Ansel Adams. 1000 Nudes offers a cross-section of the history of nude photography, ranging from the earliest nude daguerrotypes and ethnographic nude photographs to experimental nude photography. The period of time spanned by this work is from 1839 to roughly 1939, from the medium's infancy to the end of the classic modernist period. Content-wise, the book pays tribute to the full range of pictorial approaches, from the manually elaborated artistic nudes of the turn of the century, enveloped in layers of theory.

"Edna Bullock (1902-1975) began her career as a photographer in 1976 at the age of sixty-one, one year after the death of her husband, Wynn Bullock, also a well-known photographer. Although Bullock dealt with a variety of subjects over her twenty years as a photographer, she eventually came to concentrate on the nude, both male and female, which she primarily photographed in natural environments."

Edna Bullock came to photography late in life. Based on this collection, I'm glad she did.

The large majority of these photos feature a single female model in a natural setting. No one theme dominates this book completely. Although most models are Anglos, darker tones appear often. Most models are women, but men appear as well. Some feature man-made or interior settings, some are simple still-lifes, some use multiple exposures or other visual stunts (not my favorites), and many models lie outside the standard model of beauty. Pat, for example offers natural and lovely curves that would never appear in a fashion portfolio.

Bullock differs from the main stream of male photographers in centering on the interaction of person (or people) and environment - there's simple beauty in her models, too, but doesn't share so many men's singleness of mind in pursuing it. This isn't the lushest or most dramatic collection around, but an easy one to enjoy.

The entire Bullock experience of Photography might be described as a "Labor of Love". Following the death of her husband, acclaimed photographer Wynn Bullock, Edna Bullock picked up her first camera. Wynn's camera that is. What emerged was a style that is pure. So uniquely Edna. The nude body in nature so positively merged with the environment as to enrapture the viewer and cause pure awe. Edna's ability to "compose" reflected years of true understanding of the fine art that is black and white photography. What a gift! This book is further enhanced by the words of Barbara Bullock-Wilson, Edna's daughter. A must have for any serious collector.
