I found this photography book particularly fascinating. It’s a history not of iconic images but, rather, of the machines that made them possible. Some of the biggest developments are thoroughly discussed. Michael Freeman is on this list twice and with good reason: I love the way he writes. Design is the single most important factor in creating a successful photograph. It helps you work on your ability to see the potential for a strong picture.

There are 256 pages to the book, everything from lens design and digital sensors to "raw" processing to ideas on selling photographs. If you're new to digital photography, this probably isn't the book for you.

Freeman goes on to talk about how the technology of digital photography is important (a tool) – but that it is actually the decisions that a photographer makes that are more important – this book is about those decisions. One more quote from the intro: Most people using a camera for the first time try to master the controls but ignore the ideas.

I have two or three other books by Michael Freeman, and I really liked his approach. This one, though, is a disappointment. He touches extremely lightly on a multitude of topics, and doesn't really do any of them justice. If you're familiar with his other works, don't expect this one to be in the same vein.

I've actually looked really hard for a general, all-around photography book that encompasses all the latest technological advances in digital photography. I was beginning to think no one wanted to take on the arduous task of writing such a book until I found this magical encyclopedia of All Things Digital Photography. This book discusses in detail *every* aspect of digital photography: from the essential components that comprise a digital SLR, to ideal features on a camera, from workflow and recommended computer setup, to basic image editing, correction, and developing--this book covers it all! I have specific pages in my book tabbed as reference such as the resolution printout size chart, discussions on compression image quality, and bit depth. All these topics are essential to understanding the new world of digital photography and I have found no one covers it better. As I dig down into the writing, I find it is accurate (still relevant--recently published in 2012), detailed to a level it needs to be as part of discussing new technology, but still the tone is written for those looking to learn on their own.

Finally, my biggest weakness in the digital realm is everything that comes after taking the photo. Michael has dedicated no less than one half of the book to proper workflow management with his recommendations on what works best such as with key topics like learning to download daily, how to stay organized by adding keywords to your photos, and addressing all the adjustments you can make in both Mac and PC photo editing software of various versions. Those that criticize this book perhaps already knew this stuff already? As a budding hobbyist, this was exactly what I needed. THIS FLAWLESS BOOK GETS MY HIGHEST PRAISE! I bring this book out and show my photography friends or take it to photography class and tell everyone how great it is as often as I can. Each page is full-color matte with expert images--I'd pay twice the price is you sold it to me again! It's a shame not many people have heard about it. But maybe you-my lucky reader-will discover it by reading this review. BUY IT! And now on to other Michael Freeman Photography books...!
