Product just delivered. This is BIG. Heavy, broad, tall, and full of what it's supposed to be full of. Kind of knocked me sideways.

I have spent many months immersing myself in the life and work of George MacDonald, proud native of Grampian/Aberdeenshire. Typically, his hometown has two names: Strathbogie, for the river it borders; and Huntly, the demesne of the Englishman to whom the Crown handed over the, what do you call it, lairdship or something. Thanks to MacDonald I needed the information in this dictionary.

Of course, MacDonald was a Victorian literary figure, and spent his later years away from Scotland apart from tours and visits. But his prolific books run the gamut from fairy tales and fantasies in the King's English, to novels and fables steeped in the lowlander dialect variously called Doric, Broad Scotch, or Braid Scot.

In such books as "Malcolm," "Alec Forbes of Howglen," "What's Mine's Mine," "Sir Gibbie," "Donal Grant," "Castle Warlock," and "Salted with Fire," along with shorter stories and tales like "The Wow o' Rivven" and "The Carasoyn," access to a reference source for the Scots dialect is essential to comprehending George MacDonald's writing.

And this reference source is no pocket-sized book, it is a one-volume encyclopedia. Or, maybe, an answer to prayer (shout out to MacDonald's heartfelt Christianity).

Edinburgh University Press puts out this super Scots Dictionary. It's often very hard to find good a Scots Dictionary or a Good Gaelic Dictionary. This one is VERY good. 820 pages worth, not a little pocket size. It has meanings, spelling variants, pronunciation guide, information on when and were words are used denoting area and districts, grammatical information, and idioms & phrases. What I like best about it - entomologies of the words. So many dictionaries leave off the origins of words, which is so very important when writing history and historical fiction.

It's painstakingly edited and without flaws from start to finish. Best of all it's not teeny print. The print is very clear and easy on the eyes!

Highly recommended.

I ordered this book in order to use it for language research on a book that I am editing. It is an absolutely excellent resource for anyone who needs to understand the Scot's dialect. It is as it says, a dictionary, and one that give thorough, concise definitions of words.

The Concise Scots Dictionary presents an excellent 816-page source of definitions for Scots words. It also contains 39 pages on the history of Scots, with a clear explanation of the dictionary's format. Two appendices explain Scots currency, weights and measures, as well as churches in Scotland. I have bought it because I rely on it constantly as an invaluable aid to researching Scots history, with particular reference to the Weir family.
