This Chinese-English dictionary is the result of adding traditional characters and English translation to what had been a widely used Chinese-Chinese dictionary in simplified characters with words arranged in order by the Pinyin romanisation - mostly, I believe, for primary and middle school students in China. The addition of traditional characters is not only helpful for reading newspapers from Taiwan or from Hong Kong or other texts not using simplified characters but also for reading written material pre-dating the post 1949 attempt in Mainland China to replace all written characters with officially selected simplified characters. A draw back of only knowing the simplified characters is that it can make reading older material very difficult or seem impossible. [I do not know but that this also may have been one appeal to some officials in only teaching most people the simplified characters.. it could give a kind of censorship opportunity of what material a portion of the literate population had access to].

I know when I showed some material to some friends from Mainland China, they explained they could not understand the 'old' characters at all so could not read the material or appreciate what the calligraphy (in once case) said. On the other hand I know that other friends from Mainland China can read ancient texts but I suspect their education was a bit different from the first people I mention, where the education had almost completely been, I believe, in highly technical areas.

This dictionary facilitates looking up characters by Pinyin, which is faster for me than by character, and also a great help as I know many more 'characters' from conversation than I can reliably recognise (or recognise at all) when written or printed and have to be careful if I am trying to write something in Chinese of falling into using 'bai zi' {'white or perhaps non-specific characters' is one translation} where one writes the wrong character with the same pronunciation instead of the one one meant to use ... something that rust especially on top of my low level of knowledge creates an ever increasing risk of... [ though I have even had a Chinese friend who graduated from Chinese university remark that her family had pointed out to her that this was happening in some of her letters back home... and they had teased her that she had not learnt English yet and she already was forgetting Chinese... but perhaps in her case the 'bai zi' reflected her writing the letters home while distracted and overworked as she was very busy as a mother of several children and a Chinese instructor at an American university]

For me, it is also a great help as I can have the goal of trying to learn more and more of the characters a Chinese high school student would recognise..

I purchased this for someone else, but have been told by the recipient that this is a very good Chinese dictionary. It is good that the characters used are traditional. Overall, the recipient is very pleased with it.
