The Sherlock Holmes Encyclopedia

When Orlando Park read “The Hound of the Baskervilles” it make a lasting impression. He read the other long stories and the fifty-six short stories and took notes. Later he began the compilation of the names and place mentioned in Arthur Conan Doule’s stories about Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson. This 1962 book is based on the two-volume Memorial Edition of 1931 “The Complete Sherlock Holmes”. The ‘Preface’ lists some unresolved questions: the number of years that Holmes and Watson collaborated; or the years of Watson’s first marriage. [Doyle’s first wife died of TB and this could be the fate of Mary Morstan.] ‘Sherlock Holmes’ is the most famous detective in fiction. The stories have been translated into other languages. Many movies were made about Holmes, and a TV series in 1954.

What is the popular appeal of Sherlock Holmes? He represents Justice who uncovers the guilty and exculpates the innocent, which is how people expect the world to work. The series featuring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce used a much older Watson than Holmes. I think the fictional Watson was only a few years older than Holmes given their meeting in “A Study in Scarlet”. Watson was more worldly: he bet on Silver Blaze when the horse was recovered and the odds were favorable; he romanced Mary Morstan whose personality alone was attractive. Both lacked relatives. Watson was handy with a pistol, his army experience, compared to the more cerebral Holmes. I think the 1954 TV series best illustrates their ability to work together, even if most of them are original stories.
